Why? Canadian money trading at (near) parity with the US dollar doesn't mean all of a sudden it's going to be cheaper to buy project cars in the US. It's going to cost you the same in CDN $ as it would in US $ to buy that 1961 Dodge. I'd hold off on loading up the family for a trip down south until the CDN $ goes up significantly against the USD, which is not too likely, if I were you.

(Now if you have some bartering goods a feller could use like corn squeezins, beaver pelts, oil sands, tall timber, etc. maybe we do some business...)

au contraire mon frere! Used cars in the US are significantly cheaper than in canada. The difference is so great that toyota ,gm etc have forbid their dealers from selling new cars to canadians as it will undermine the canadian dealers.

There are a lot more vintage Mopars to be found south of the border for restoration than north of it !! So yesss it's finally our time ..... for those of us who have the extra cash to spare.

?? That doesn't make sense. The car markers (GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford, et al) aren't selling new cars to Canadians because the price of used cars is so low in the US. ?? Now I know you're funnin'. Pass me some of that Canadian Club to refresh my whiskey goggles.

Sorry for confusion in the above post. Both new and used vehicles are cheaper in US by considerable margin but new car dealers in US have been instructed by the manufacturers not to sell to canadians. The crux of the matter is that we have currency parity but overall similar goods cost 10-15% more than stateside. My original point was that its the best time for us canadians to import cars as we have not had parity since 1976!

OK It is clearer now. The same goods cost 10-15% more in Canada so the US new car dealers are not supposed to sell to Canadians because it would cause a hardship for the Canadian dealers. Sounds like a tax dodge to me.

It is. Cars, and virtually everything else, cost more in Canada due to higher taxes, transportatiion costs, etc. Canada is the second largest country in the world as far as land mass goes, but our population, and thus our retail market, is 10% of the U.S. The Canadian car dealer has to pay higher taxes to cover such things as medicare - many say it is free, but we pay for it indirectly.

Also, not all cars sold in the U.S. can be imported into Canada. There is a list of vehicles built from 1981 that is split into three categories - cars that can be imported as is; cars that can be imported with some modifications; and cars that cannot be imported as they cannot be modified to Canadian safety standards. For example, cars sold in Canada must have anchors for child seats in the rear and must meet collision standards. Many North American-built cars have the structural supports on place, but many imports to the U.S. do not. And the supports are not just weld 'em pieces.

Of course, when you hit the border you get nailed for the federal government's Goods & Services Tax, plus your province's Provincial Sales Tax. And if the customs people don't get you for the PST, the provincial motor vehicle people will.

Plus, if you want your car covered to Canadian insurance values, you will have to declare the car's value for the Canadian market. And here in B.C. that means you pay the P.S.T. on the Canadian market value, and not the American purchase price.

The temptation to buy in the U.S. now is great as one Canadian dollar will buy one Ameican dollar. Less than ten years ago you were doing good when an American dollar went for $1.30 Canadian.
