I know this topic has been flogged before, BUT, here we go. Which are the correct engine/motor mounts to use, are they factory mounts or fabricated? Will they fit into existing frame holes? I have a 67 chrysler 440 and matching tranny, I'm assuming a trans mounting bracket will need to be fabricated, no? Will the 67 C-Body oilpan work with the 58 Plymouth chassis?

PM Dukeboy, a member on this forum. He is currently installing a 440 and headers into his '58 Plymouth, and will know detailed information to this installation. ---John

MoparBrew, the 440 in a '58 Plymouth is easy as pie! HOWEVER, you will have to "Make/Fab some parts, but it's easy!
First, I used the stock "Cup" style mounts from the poly 301 V8, just cut them where they fit up to the block, and rewelded....You will need the C-Body engine mounts that are bolted to the block however, to weld to the stock "Cup" pieces from the '58...
Next, the trans..Simply turn your crossmember around backwards, and reinstall..This gives you all the room needed for the trans mount bracket to be welded onto the factory crossmember...I used the "Spool" type mount found usually in trucks/Vans...Cut the mount "ears" off the truck crossmember, then welded them to the turned around '58 crossmember..Used the factory truck mount for 727...HEADERS are a bit*h! Especially long tube ones...
I used the shorty style that were meant for the E-Body cars (Cuda/Challenger)....That C-body oil pan will work in the '58....

Yes, I did my own disc brake conversion for around $200 COMPLETE!! All with fabbed parts on a brake lathe.. Used the stock 11" rotors off an A-Body..
GM calipers just like AAJ's kit, and kept THE STOCK STEERING KNUCKLES.........

I was hoping that some factory mounts would work without having fabricate them. Weren't B engines available in 58, first year? The tranny mount solution sounds simple enough. The problem is I work on my car on the street with cars buzzing by, I've made it to 42 ....so far, and my friend is the welder with a welder so I'll show him your photos and see if he's into helping me out. He'll probably offer in lend me the welder but it'll be my first time and I definetly don't want to butcher a 58 Plymouth.

Dukeboy, thanks for response, I wish I had more room to work and weather is only gonna get colder. 1st order of business is frontend rebuild and front disc conversion which I have done before on my 62 Chrysler 300.

Well Ralph , here s the way I done mine on my 59 Ply . As you mentioned , 58 was the first year of the B motor , oh and by the way I went with the B 400 . I purchased 59 Desoto motor mounts from Big M , he s a member on this site . I had to cut the cups from the engine mounting tabs and moved the cups down 1 in . Used a 64 C body oilpan and also there is a section of the tranny xmember that I grafted on my 59 xmember . Used the 64 tranny mount and the 64 3sp p/b tranny . Got a 3spd p/b shifter also from Big M , He has a lot of parts for these old cars . Went with a 69 Newport rad and shroud and had to get a new driveshaft made up cause my 64 tranny did not have the drum on the back of it .Like dukeboy E body headers , had to massage the front tube on each side to clear the motor mounts . I am very satisfied the way it came out . I used to mess with Ch**ys , and as everyone says with Ch**y just about everything is interchangeable , well I here to tell ya , I did it all with Mopar parts and it wasn t all that frustrating like I thought it would . I know everyone can t do it but what took away a lot of frustration was the fact that I had 3 old Mopars to pic parts from . If I had to go junkyard hopping that would have really sucked .

My friend the welder wants to cut off the engine mount tabs on the front crossmember, use late model 440 spool type mounts and install mounting tabs on the crossmember all gusseted up. sounds feasable to me. I wish I had one of those plastic engine blocks like dukeboy, make it alot easier to set up. He says we should do it with a tranny connected to the block so we make sure we set it up level. We'll see, I'm gathering my front disc brake parts and waiting for the basic kit from AAJ. I'll probably putt around with the 318 over the winter. My other friend Tommy is hollering "that's a low production car, keep it original!!"

These photos look to me to show metal-to-metal contact, bypassing the rubber isolation. This will make to a rather noisy operation, not to mention the vibration. A 440 with any build to it is not going to idle quietly under the hood all the time. Is there not a better isolator of a mount to use ?

Looks to me like there's a rubber insulator between the cup & the frame, isn't there?

UM, yes their touching NOW.....The bolts aren't tight...............BTW: I have a turn buckle and solid mounts on my General Lee, and it seems to idle fine with a LUMPY cam, hardly any vibration....May not be suitable for some, but for me, I'm not tryin' to go to sleep when I drive my cars....

When bolted in, they do not touch...Look again at the top "Gold" photo.....

And Mopar brew didn't want to butcher a '58 Plymouth? Well, my motor mounts use the STOCK mounts on the frame.......
