Lord Virgil died at the age of 62 in 1973. Rather young. Anyone know the cause of death ?

I know he was bedridden with heart problems (he had a heart attack late in his life) but I'm not certain of his cause of death.

He also had a heart attack in 1957. He would have been 48 at the time. I know I have seen him posed with a cigarette in his hand - which was kinda typical for promo stuff then - but do not know if he smoked. Chances are, he did, given the popularity of it back in the day.

Yes, he smoked quite a bit.

You should get a copy of the book that just came out - lots of never before told stories from Ex's life... and it's a good read!

One of the unfortunate parallels to the FL era was the popularity of smoking. Even by the late 70's, very few original owners were still alive. Pretty much shuts you down. Like pouring used motor oil down your carb.

Yeah, I know ..... think of all that money !

Looking @ my medical dictionary, here: Cerebral aneurysms are not particularily common disorders (at all).

The Cerebra are located at the upper areas, separated by the longitudial fissure. They are considered as being the center of consciousness, control sensations and higher mental faculties, like memory, learning/reasoning, and voluntary muscular activities.

You've got your Frontal, Parietal, Temporal & Occipital lobes, so Ex's aneurysm could have occured over a wide-portion of his brain.

But, an aneurysm is defined as being a localized abnormal dilation of a blood vessel USUALLY an artery, due to a congenital defect or weakness in the wall of the vessel. An artery is usually involved, due to its higher internal blood pressure.

Aneurysms can also result from bacteriological infection, or trauma, in a peripheral artery.

An aneurysm does not appear to be a direct resultative of smoking activity; but: big deal, otherwize.

There are some systemic arteries which service the cerebral cortex, which appear to be branches off of the Common Carotid
artery.

A stroke , however, can be an actual hemmorhage, from a rupture of a vessel, or of an aneurysm, (as an associative factor with
high blood pressure which is associative with smoking), occurring in about 20% of instances.

A stroke is more commonly associated with the brain's starvation of blood, as the result of the formation of a blood clot (about 80%
causation-rate).

So, I'll bet that Ex succumbed to a stroke event, as a result of the formation of an aneurysm, somewhere in his Cerebral Cortex.

He woulda gone quickly, and probably never know what had hit him.

HEH; Ray; ever notice how Humphrey Bogart aged, in the years before his death?

Whoops... my mistake here... I thought he died in '63, not '73!

And no, I can't say my observations of Humphrey Bogart were that close. But he smoked, didn't he?

He died of (lung?) cancer, but, he aged a lot, after meeting-up with Lauren Bacall, in To Have and Have Not (in 1946-ish?).

Oh the hand wringing, anti-smoking brigade! It amazes me how some people are obsessed with smoking and blame everything on it. Perhaps some deeper psychological reason for your hatred of smoking, Doctor Desoto? Perhaps somewhere in your family was a 3 packs a day person who wrecked himself from overindulgence?
I prefer to avoid the hype, the media, and look at the facts in my own life, and the ACTUAL parallels that I witness.
My father, who never ever smoked in his life, died in his 30's.
My mother who never ever smoked, has developed and is fighting cancer.
My grandfather, who smoked since he was 12, and smoked until the end of his completely healthy full life at 89.
My grandmother, who lived with my 'smoking' grandfather as a 'passive' smoker (you gotta love that bulls**t!), for over 65 years, died at 94 years old.
How many of the "oldest people in the world" stories on the news feature old folks who smoked their whole lives, or who gave up when they were 110 years old?
There's more to it than just smoking folks.
The generalisation cast about by enthusiastic anti-smokers is pathetic. If you don't like it then don't smoke, but quit whingeing to everyone else.
They say stress is one of the biggest causes of heart failure leading to death, perhaps all that stressing about other people smoking will cut your own life short. Now wouldn't THAT be a paradox to think about...
Maybe smoking does take 10 years off your life, but it's the last 10 years and they are usually the s**ttiest years anyway. Nobody likes a quitter!

My dad did, until he died, @ 83 (from congestive heart failure) and my ma still smokes, @ 87 .

I never did, though.

Neil.
Both good innings if you ask me.
And that is more evidence for the anti-smoking brigade to explain, if it is so bad for you as they say....
Enjoy life whatever you do.
Glenn.

Yeah, and Jim Fixx (The Joy of Running) died @ 43----of course, he knew that he had a family history of heart-failure (or
whatever it was, that keeeld heem).

Still, Glenn, my great friend, from Tulsarama: please stop smoking, for your own 'good'.

And you, too: Tim Dupont (Mr. 1956 D-500-1).

Sorry, Glenn, the numbers work against you.

How some survive the massive internal degradation for years is a true testament to the body's ability to cope.

My Uncle opened up a woman on the slab for a couple of us kids after catching my cousin smoking. Her lungs looked and smelled like car wash sponges just pulled out of a bucket of used motor oil.

Take the argument where you please. I simply see it as taking care of yourself and avoiding poor odds. That's all.

Many of Virgil's generation died young, and most men smoked. That isn't whining. That is stating known history.

Smoking is good for you!

By the way I had a 89 lebaron four cylinder car that I ran out of oil twice (creased the oil pan twice). I was wondering why it was running hot.... And drove it for 200,000+ miles without tearing into it. So engine oil isn't essential either so stop whining about that all you members of the pro-lubrication brigade!
