Elite Veteran Posts: 852 Location: Etters Pa | Hey Good luck John, If you get it post some pictures.. The only other 50's Plymouth Airport Limo I ever ran across was a 57 in a local yard here about 25 years ago. It was laying on the roof so getting the whole picture as they say was a bit rough..

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7809 Location: Williams California | Hi Tony, Here's a few pics of when the car was still on my trailer. I was going to try to get it going for my wedding in August, but too many other things had to be done first. There was no engine or trans, the floors have typical rust beneath the matting, but it is definitely restoreable. ---John ('59 Ply airport limo 001.jpg) ('59 Ply airport limo 002.jpg) ('59 Ply airport limo 003.jpg) ('59 Ply airport limo 004.jpg) Attachments ---------------- '59 Ply airport limo 001.jpg (43KB - 198 downloads) '59 Ply airport limo 002.jpg (55KB - 160 downloads) '59 Ply airport limo 003.jpg (49KB - 205 downloads) '59 Ply airport limo 004.jpg (52KB - 174 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1302 Location: Skaneateles,NY(summer)/Port St.Lucie,FL(winter) | John, Did they stretch a 4 door wagon? What does it look like the seats came out of? Is the rack on top complete?...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7809 Location: Williams California | Yes, it started out as a 4-door Suburban wagon. Heavy steel channels were added to the frame by the conversion company to add rigidity to the chassis when it was stretched. Several of the seats were also custom made units as well. The rack on the top is surprisingly complete, although the wood on the sides was added later. ---John

Member Posts: 40 Location: New Zealand | Hi, I just joined Forward Look & saw this thread - what an excellent find! I'm looking for an airport limo to import to New Zealand - easiest is Cali & surrounding states as everything is shipped from LA. I'll keep the group posted on my progress I have a '58 Plymouth & a '59 Desoto Diplomat over here in NZ (as well as several other old American cars). John, if you hear of any others, please let me know & good luck with the wedding planning! My wife-to-be is from New Jersey & we're getting married out here (NZ) in February so I know how time flies by! Cheers, Allan

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7809 Location: Williams California | Jimmy, isn't it strange when you make an offer on a car, or even ask if it is for sale, only to be told "no, it is definitely not going to be sold" and somewhere down the line you find it has either been given away, or they paid a towing company to haul it off? I have had that happen several times myself. ---John

Expert Posts: 1918 Location: Hell's Outhouse - a.k.a. Buckeye, Arizona | Brother, don't I know it. Had the same thing happen in 1992 - my first of 3 attempts at buying a FL car. Long story short, was all set to buy a '59 DeSoto Firedome Seville 4 door hardtop from a woman in Chandler. Maybe my appearance scared her a bit (I was, as I am now, 6' 4", around 245) or maybe it was the fact that I was just 20 years old at the time, but when I showed up - $2,500 even, cash in hand - with a buddy to finally pick her up, she re-negged - Her reason: It was her late husband's car and she "just couldn't bear to part with it just yet," nevermind the fact that we'd discussed it - both in person and by phone - over a period of 4 days. While I was working for Bo Malefors here in Arizona in the spring of 1993, we were down in Hidden Valley at their salvage yard - and LOOOOOO - there it was!!! The same darn white-with-blue-spear '59 Firedome Seville 4 door hardtop sitting in the parking lot. The owner had picked it up and hauled it off for the same lady just a few months earlier. Maybe I forgot to shave that day..... :?

Member Posts: 40 Location: New Zealand | Hey Big M, how's that limo of yours coming along? I bought that 59 Airport limo from Desert Valley (that Jeff mentions above). I'd gone to take a look at it when we were in the US last year & it arrived in New Zealand last week Lots to do but I'm betting yours will be on the road much sooner! Hope the wedding went well Cheers, Allan

Extreme Veteran Posts: 397 Location: Milano, Italy | congratulation for saving that car! I read that one front brake drum is missing. If it is a 10", I have one brand new, without the center hub, bought by mistake (my Belvy uses the 11") at rockauto.com. I'm selling it for 20 bucks. (more than 50% down)

Thank you for your generous offer on the drum, however. ---John

Member Posts: 40 Location: New Zealand | Hi John, yeah I saw you mention that on another thread - according to the VIN, she's a stretched Saratoga, which I read somewhere was a Windsor body with New Yorker front clip. However, they may have done something different when they were stretched. What was the difference between the Windsor & the Imperial? The stretch is different to what I've seen with other models too - they've lengthened the chassis rails & added extra rails underneath for strength. Others I've seen basically cut the car in half then added a single central rail. So this should be darn strong. Not sure who did the stretch - I suspect Armbruster but can't find any id tags. Early days yet but am thinking about motor etc. She's got a stuffed 383 at the moment but I might go for a 440 smog engine + 727. Also may have to look at airbag suspension cos she's very low & will end up getting beached... What are these rear ends like? I want to eventually have her as a for-hire wedding car so it needs to be reliable & easy to repair quickly (i.e. not having to wait months for parts) Cheers, Allan

Expert Posts: 1918 Location: Hell's Outhouse - a.k.a. Buckeye, Arizona | Yep, she's got a bucketload of reinforcing, alright. One thing I'd think would be absolute murder to replace on these airport/limo-type stretchers is the driveshaft - God help if that baby even has the slightest wobble or is missing altogether.....

Member Posts: 40 Location: New Zealand | Dunno which photo you mean but we measured and there was definitely no sagging - maybe it's the angle of the photo? 1955Coronado> I'm assuming the driveshaft is up to the job but was planning on getting it tested & balanced. Not difficult to get whole shafts made up but may as well use what's there if it's in good condition. Lot of other things to do before I have to worry about that though
