Years ago, I had a 57 Plymouth Belvedere with a 301. When I bought it, it was running very rough. Now I have a 62 Plymouth belvedere with a 318 and it’s running just as rough. I had an old friend back then…he told me over the phone how to adjust the valves/rocker arms. I remember removing the valve covers and one by one using metal feeler gauges to set proper clearance for all the intakes and all the exhausts. And if I remember right one was at .019” and the other was at .012” but I forget the details. I did it while the engine was running and the outcome was fantastic. I want to do the same with my 62 poly 318 but I don’t remember the details. Can anyone here describe in detail to me what to do…like which one is the exhaust valve/what clearance does that get…which one is the intake valve and what clearance does that get…any and all info. would be much appreciated. Thank you, Bob.

The '62 hot valve clearances are .010" Intake and .018" Exhaust. Doing it running can be messy, if you want to do it without running, the chart below will help.

Thank you for that 57chizler. I wish I could find a video or have someone show me in person how to do the static valve adjustment but I don’t. I did the dynamic adjustment years ago so I feel comfortable with it, although I sure need reminder on which one is the exhaust and which one is the intake valve. Is there an easy way to describe? Also, I was out there yesterday and decided to take compression readings. They’re all pretty good. All 8 are between 125 and 140. I’ve always understood that if they’re all within 10% that’s in spec. Having said that…would a valve adjustment still be necessary? As stated earlier the engine is not running smoothly at idle. I’ve replaced points and condenser…timed to spec…wires look good. Don’t believe they’re arcing/bad. Timing mark is steady while I have gun on it. Plugs didn’t look the desired brown hue though. Looked on the black moist side. Carb. is suspect because both air/fuel adjustments don’t do much when screwing in/out. Has a fairly new carb on it. I remember when I did valve adjustment years ago on my 57 301 engine…the compression readings were way out of wack. Some real low/scary low but that dynamic valve adjustment brought everything back in line. Ran very smoothly afterwards. Any insight here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Intakes are easy, just see if the valve in question lines up with an intake manifold runner.
