hey everybody, I pulled apart some of the cooling system tonight. i pulled off the top hose, the bottom hose, temp sender, the top housing with the thermostat in it. When i pulled apart the housing, this is what greeted me. I have never seen a thermostat like this, is it just a really old one? maybe i'm just too young (25). there were no markings on it indicating what temperate thermostat it was. i thought it might of been installed backwards!was it installed backwards??? sorry for the blurry pics, best i could do. but check it out it has the mechanism and 2 springs on the hose side and basically nothing on the other side. I picked up a 190 thermostat at the parts store to replace it,, should i have gotten a 180 one instead? here are a couple pictures that will explain it better.

Larry --- If that first picture is how the thermostat was positioned in the housing
it was, indeed installed backward. The Thermostatic portion of the thermostat
( the part that senses coolant temp ) ALWAYS goes down or toward the engine water.
It doesn't do any good to sense radiator water temp.

190 is to hot for most B Blocks from the day, I would suggest no more than 180. That looks like the oe t'sat.

Yep, the thermostat is upside down in the first pic, really old, the factory original, 190 is too hot
take it back and get a 170.....

Every parts store you go to nowadays recommends too hot of a thermostat because newer engines run better hotter. That is bs... our engines run better cooler. many of them, if they get to the 190 range start to get into the range that the cooling system can't recover from, and they run hot.

so you recommend i get a 170? i got a 180 from the store already..no problem to take it back though..or would a 160 be better?

all the info i have shows a thermostat range of 160 to 180-from about 1950 to 1960 for all mopar models------i've always liked 180 but------------sometimes 180 was a little too much------your's looks to be an old bridgeport------it's the only one with the dual springs i know of---------------------later
