What does this sentence mean? "I have a copy of the IBM card showing that the body code number matches the serial number." How does he know the VIN if there is no title or VIN plate? Is he going off the VIN stamped on the frame?

Yikes. The title to this post about says it. Maybe he knew the VIN from some other paper work, and that's how he got the IBM card? If the VIN is on the frame somewhere I would really like to know where it is. I have this problem with a '61 Imperial convertible, no tag, no paperwork.

Yeah, but it could be a real can of worms. Very possibly, a previous owner removed the VIN and swapped it over to a cleaner New Yorker body so that the original VIN is already in use and the car is just a VIN-less hulk of parts at this point.

The SO number from the IBM card appears on the data tag and is also stamped in the firewall above the blower motor. You can almost see it in the first photo. This number is unique to the car/VIN, but you'd have to look through the IBM cards to find the SO number. This VIN is on the Chrysler 300 Club International's 300-G roster, so this was likely cross-checked by them since they have copies of the IBM cards. The seller is a longtime club member, so it looks like the story checks out. You could certainly know for sure by looking at that pile of parts and the IBM card.

When did they start putting that number there? Would it exist on a '57 or '58 as well?

As far as I know this started with the unibody Chrysler in 1960. Pretty sure '62 has it, too. Not sure after that.

It's rare, but for all the work it needs I'd settle for an automatic car that's already in one piece.

I don't know that the 3-speed manual has proven to add much value. Yeah, it's rare but you get a non-synchro trans and you give up a good trans for the era and one of the biggest conversation pieces of the car - the pushbuttons!

Yep. For every person you impress with your clutch pedal you lose 5 that you impress with your pushbuttons.

For 57/8 there were no numbers on the body sheet metal but the engine number was stamped on the frame.

There is nothing so fun as a top-down, gear shifting stick
finned car. Few were ever offered, and few were built. My
60 DeSoto stick was pretty much the mechanical equivilent
of this one. The only real down side was stop-and-go traffic
with that non-synchro 1st gear. If the stock tranny is too
much of a problem for a person, swap in a Tremec 5-speed
and put the stocker on a shelf. Pushbuttons might impress
the uninitiated, but amongst FL afficianados, they are as typical
as a heater or radio.

Yeah but that car was not a top-down kinda car.

And if you swap in a 5 speed....many of the FL afficionados will get green in the gills.

So....a huge resto project that you're almost certain to be upside down on all to impress a tiny handful of people. Takes a special buyer.
