Expert Posts: 2308 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | Lo how the mighty have fallen! It survived domestically until 1961 as a combination of Chrysler Windsor body and Dodge Dart interior; why not as a compact import? The 1960-62 Lancer was not very attractive choice though imho.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | And in 1962 Chrysler South Africa offered the DeSoto Diplomat - a 1962 Dodge Dart 440 sedan with DeSoto nameplates, etc. The Rebel appears to be based on leftover 1961 Dodge Lancers. Another oddball I am trying to track down is the Canadian-built 1961-62 Dodge Lancer for export. It was a Valiant with a Lancer truck lid, Lancer nameplates and emblems. The grille, taillights, and dash were pure Valiant, with the except of the nameplates.

Elite Veteran Posts: 988 Location: Kansas City, Kansas | Anyone have any clue how many of the '62 Rebel (Dodge Lancer) or Diplomat (Dodge Dart) were exported to S.Africa? Was it in the hundreds or the thousands? And how many '63's?? Edited by slimwhitman 2009-08-17 11:45 PM

Was it in the hundreds or the thousands? And how many '63's?? To be precise, none. The cars shipped to South Africa were recorded as Lancers and Darts in Detroit and were shipped CKD. In SA they were put together with DeSoto nameplates. Have yet to find out what serial numbers they were given, if they had special numbers. As to how many Rebels and Diplomats rolled off the line, hundreds would perhaps be an overstatement. The 1963 Rebel appears to be a 1961 Lancer, which would mean it was built from leftover cars. Chrysler Great Britain did that with 1934 Airflows - sold them as 1935 models and put an "L" (for 1935) in front of the British serial number. And for the few Airflows still leftover, CGB put an "M" on the serial number and sold them as 1936 models. In 1969 Dodge Monacos were sold in South Africa as Chryslers while Australia sold Plymouth Fury models as Dodges.

You would probably have a lot better luck finding a set of them? well let the luck be on your side... this is the only wayfarer ute ive ever seen... i featured it in the club magazine, this year the spotlight for all chrysler day was 'commercial vehicle' this vehicle was one of two vehicles that got a 'most interesting commercial' trophy... cheers adriana ps... i absolutely adore this car! it is fabulous, i love the colour, i love the originality of it and i love the fact that no one else has one! they were also meant to have made wagons, but they must be as rare as hens teeth and i have never seen even seen a picture of one let alone the real deal... well at least i heard there were wagons made, maybe someone was pulling my leg...
