You need to dig deep in what options your car has Adriana - that can give clues to the hard-core guys. I'm trying to dechifre the Chrysler 60 tags with help from many body-tags, car owners, visual checks of the actual cars and most of all the knowledge from Bill Watson - Chrycoman. PS - I've heard the name "Designator" for the Letter/Number combo - but I'm not sure that's correct DS Edited by wizard 2009-09-09 8:41 AM

Expert Posts: 1480 Location: Australia | just thought there might be a decoder available for the top section, wanted to know what number/ letters actually referred too... well my car has on it... padded dash, one outside mirror, cigar lighter, jiffy jet system, deluxe radio... which i believe are all original options to the car... adriana

I tried to check with my '60 notes, but no Chrysler codes seems to fit in on your '61 Plymouth. As for the bigger numbers 1 5 (15) and 6 punched over the letters (or under the first number row), I really don't know what they stand for. There's difference even on Chrysler tags from 60 to 61. Hopefully, there will not be a lot of numbers-replication of option coding on your IBM card copy ; suppose that you find only one "5" on the IBM card--- that will pretty much confirm that that 'spot' on the P/T plate confirms/reveals an option code "5". But, your particular P/T plate has two "5's" on it, so, the B./Sheet and the IBM card will have at least two "5's" on it, as well. There CAN/could be MORE than just two "5's" on the IBM card, however, because not all of the many-different options-codes that a car has are listed ON the P/T plate. You might, then, have had one of the codes broken--bummer--- that your P/T plate has TWO "5's" on it; "1's", "2's" and "3's" are very common codings, on the Broadcast & IBM documents, as well. But, there IS only one "6" and one "7" on your P/T plate! Well, that's how you begin: you need to find as many 61 PLY's as possible, hopefully with a receptive owner who will/can go over his car's options with you, and who will, hopefully, have a heavily optioned car, and who will have either/both of the B.Sheet and the IBM card on his car, to refer to. You should also design a formal 1961 PLY car-owner Registration Form so that the cars' records that you document can be preserved and referenced in the future. Find-document enough people/cars like that, and, eventually, you, too, will be a code breaker. What is frustrating is that you will find a lot of P/T plates, e.g., but you will not have a B.Sheet or IBM card copy, to refer to, for decoding it. Now, for the PhD in code breaking, there are MANY individual code-items which have SEVERAL different option code numbers which can appear on a P/T plate, such as that/those for tinted window variations. And, then, there's the problem of INTERPRETING what a known-number might confirm (such as your P/T plate's "6" and its "7"), even on the Broadcast Sheet and or on the IBM card copy--AND, being able to READ a lousy-condition photocopy of the IBM card! Dealer invoices are also really helpful (as in confirming a tire type and size) for various various option codes and shipping information. Ross Roy data (propaganda-) books, and factory paint/trim selector-books are invaluable reference materials. Good luck, and now go get started.... Edited by d500neil 2009-09-09 6:44 PM
