Was thinking this myself, was worried parts would be hard to find to maintain the original as I am just starting to gather any info about this car. Just joined this site and love the car so I had to have it...ya know? Do you own a royal?

Welcome to the gang, Chris. Cool to see another 55 CRL owner joining. You have to post some pic's...
This is an easy swap if you look for a 8 3/4” rear end with 1 3/8” pinion from a 60’s B-body MoPar. The pinion flange is interchangeable so you can keep the drive shaft with the Ball and Trunnion joints. The Carrier Casting Number should be 2070 741 (search this forum for more info on 2070 741). Original rear end ratio is 3.54:1 with PowerFlite and with this swap you can have one with 3.23 or 2.93 for better mileage and modern axle shafts and drum brakes.

Thank you for this info, I hit a lot of dead-ends trying to find any info about this car but this site is just great and obviously a very smart choice. The 55 is a beautiful car. Thanks...Chris

I echo Thord's Welcome Chris. Post some pics of your '55. Thord's a trophy winner from some of the past posts. Mine is still in the bulding stage. John at Big M should be a source for the parts you want, if you decide to make a change. I got a complete differential from him for my '55 to retain the 3.54 ratio.

Hello, Welcome! Another 55 CRL owner!

I'm currently completing a rebuild on my 55 270 Hemi with Tri-power & mild cam. I hope to have Pics soon. I'm still running the powerflite, but thinking about converting to a torqueflite and rear end(due to Emergency Brake) I have done the disc brake conversion using the setup from AAJ Brakes and they work GREAT! I've also learned that a swap to a larger front sway bar is easy by using a larger bar from a 55-56 Desoto or Chrysler will work(Bar is only slightly longer and will work with your stock mounts.

Looking "Foward" to seeing pics of your Car!

Enjoy!

Post some measurements , like backing plate to backing plate and spring saddle to spring saddle . A Ford friend of mine has an 8" laying around , I can pull a tape across it to see . He said an 8 " is tough , he has a V8 Comet and it holds up to his banging of the gears .

Welcome Chris!  '55's are close to my '56, so we're kind of in our own little group. lol  Please post some pics!  I'm going through that decision too.  I've decided to go with a '95-96 Dodge A518 automatic/overdrive tranny because I want to go on long trips (the motor is the stock 315 Poly rebuilt).  That means going to a later rear end and fabbing new e-brake cables.  But, I don't think it will be too difficult.

I really love the single headlight models and can't wait to see pics of yours.  Good luck with your project and there are many good folks around here to answer any questions you will have (and there will be MANY! lol)  By the way, where do you hail from?

Jay

Chris, over on page-8, of the "What did you do to your car, today" thread, on our "General Discussion" message board, you'll
see a good view of my car's 2070742 carrier assembly, mated to the ubiquitous 8 3/4" tapered-axle axle-housing.

The 741 carrier housing also is compatible with our 8 3/4" rear axles (both being "fine-splined" gearsets).

There are several threads around here having to do with the use of a hub-puller to remove the tapered axles, so that the
axle seals and bearings can be overhauled, on a late 50's rear end.

Whether a person installs a late 50's tapered axle assembly, or a late 60's non-tapered axle, the real question facing you
is: what axle ratio does your car have, now, and what ratio are you interested in getting, in the future, for: 1): more performance
(but lousier mileage and operational noise due to the lower gear ratio) or, 2): more economy (poorer take-off speed but smoother/quieter operation, and better MPG)???

After considerable experimentation (replacing the OEM 3.36:1 with a limited slip 3.55:1 Sure Grip---sold to Ray Bell, in OZ-land)
and now, the super-HIGH gear 2.76:1 ratio, I would recommend the 2.93:1 with a 1957 325 c.i. engine.

Since you've got the 241 c.i. guy, your car's stock ratio is probably fine, or, maybe it's a tad too low---Thord confirms that it's the
3.54:1---I'd probably try to find that 3.23 guy at a salvage yard; 2.93:1 is probably way too high, for your car's engine size.

I just remembered: that 3.55:1 Sure Grip was installed in a "741" carrier housing.

I see no reason to limit the carrier selection to the 741, all 8 3/4" yokes prior to '69 are 10-spline, or the yokes can be changed and there are adapter U-joints to allow the use of any carrier with the current driveshaft.
