I'm in a bit of a dilemna...My '56 wagon came with the title for that car, BUT I can not find a number anywhere other than the body number tag, at the top of the cowl. No vehicle number tag or data plate. The car had been subframed with a GM sub, so any engine numbers or frame numbers from the splice forward, are not on the car.

So, where would another vin be on a '56???

The vehicle number was stamped on a plate attached to the driver's door hinge post and on the chassis, passenger side, just around the leaf spring's front hanger. Hopefully it was stamped on the side of the frame - heard of one fellow who found the vehicle numbers stamped on top of the frame when he took the body off.

And that was it back then.

Patrick, if your car title shows a VIN, you can probably work out a deal with your DMV/MVD to have them accept the
creation of a special VIN tag for/on your car.

Pretty sure that CA has that protocol available.

Armed with your car's VIN, you can buy a copy of its IBM build card (as per directions on the Sticky-message, at the
top of this message board).

The IBM card copy will confirm the car's VIN (duh) but also the particulars of your car's creation, so as to be its Birth
Certificate, if-you-will.

A search of a car's missing VIN might also be made thru the research of a state's license plate registration history.

If you can't find the VIN on the car, the state's license registration archives should be able to provide it.

Cool. The number on the DS door post is gone. I'll have to crawl under the wagon tomorrow to see if the frame number is still there. Thanks for the help!

The car has been off the road for over 30 years, the State I got the car in (and the title is from) has no record of the car at all.

OK, Patrick, so you DO know the car's VIN, from its title?

You're home, free; the H.S. will sell you all the car's build information, on its IBM card copy.

AG Back East can, then, re-stamp a VIN plate for you, and based upon the information contained on your IBM card copy
AG Back East can also stamp-out a correct (or, a reasonably-correct) P/T plate for your car, based upon assistance-
information that you should be able to receive from other 1956 PLY owner's cars' P/T plates' documentation.
