Veteran Posts: 143 Location: Atlanta, GA | Thanks Wizard. Yoiu are in good company as neither Galen Govier or Gil Cunningham could determine it. They separately surmised that is was some sort of special handling or delivery code not normally used. The car was built as a test car for the proving grounds use and has a few other code anomolies. For example, the Shipping Order Number is 0501 8888. We know the 0501 is for May 1. The 8888 is unusual and both Govier and Cunningham say it is a special order of some sort and does not follow the usual protocal of the shipping order number system. Have you seen such a number in the shipping order number? The dealer code is different and has been determined to be the Engineering Motor Pool at the Prioving grounds. Gil has seen only one other car with the same dealer code number and knows the car was tested at the proving grounds. My throry on some of these numbers that no one has seen is that they may have been used on cars that were built to be tested and then crushed as cars that went through heavy duty and high speed testing were crushed and not released to the public for safety and liability reasons. Our car was to be crushed after testing but my grandfather's boss was able to save it and send it to my grandfather as part of his retirement package from Chrysler. He was the executive that ran the forging operations. Thanks for your great information and I would be happy to send you all the info if you would like a go at decoding the car. Jack

The explanation that it might be a test car is plausible, but I dont have any information about it. I will PM my mail address to you - maybe I could help out.

Veteran Posts: 143 Location: Atlanta, GA | Thanks. I have heard a number of theorys as to the protocol of the last four digits of the SON. What do the numbers signify?

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13050 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | The SON consists of two series of 4 figures, the first, as most of us know is the schedule built date in format MMDD. The other four figures is (to my knowledge at least) an internal (assembly?)sequence number. As of your theory, this would indicate that the 8888 was "off" line - but that's only drifting now, I really don't know. As I said earlier, the oracle Bill Watson may be one of the very few that have more insight in this matters.
