New User Posts: 4 | I purchased a short block that was totally rebuilt about 15 years ago. I have had several individuals look at it and I am told that this is a warranty exchange motor. I am also told that warranty exchange motors had no serial numbers. Which is why I cannot find it. The date code is 1968. Does anyone know what this might be worth. I have had several offers but I do not know what it is truly worth. Thanks? Edited by 714bee 2009-09-09 6:34 PM

Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | By "date code" do you mean the stamped "D" along side the distributor or the casting date on the side of the block? There is some debate on this subject, '68 was the first year the feds required the VIN to be stamped in the block/transmission but the model year precedes the calendar year by several months so there's the possibility that some early blocks went unstamped. A '68 casting date on the side of the block should be late enough to be stamped, if a partial VIN is stamped it will be on the top of the block where the bellhousing mates to the block (just below the oil pressure transmitter). Others believe than a stamped "S" stamped on the data pad identifies a warranty (or parts room) engine, a warranty block won't have any date stampings on the data pad.

New User Posts: 4 | Thanks for the information. The Block is stamped with 3-3-68 and then to the rt of it 2468130-9 and LL under it. It has this number on both sides of the block. These are the only numbers other than it was made during the 1st hour of the Day shift. Thanks for the information.

Expert Posts: 3780 Location: NorCal | You're using the word "stamped" to describe the raised casting numbers, stamped numbers are applied with a hammer blow after the casting is finish machined. The casting numbers originate at the foundry where the block is cast and the stamped numbers are added later to identify the assembly. Typical stamped numbers will identify the year, displacement, build date, performance status and any oversized/undersized components installed in the completed short block. These will be found on the machined flat surface along side the distributor. Edited by 57chizler 2009-09-10 6:27 PM

New User Posts: 4 | There are no numbers at that location. There are only the casting numbers on this block. What would you estimate this motor being worth? Thanks!

This block casting matches upto a 383 1959-71 "B" Block..... so 1968 383 "B" Block..... What is it worth? A complete running engine in great shape.... maybe $800 tops or $500-$800

Thanks for the info A completely rebuilt short block for 1500 is a tad high. I bought a complete rebuilt 383 for $900. Good luck with it.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1107 Location: Arvada, Colorado (NW Denver Metro Area) | I just put in my 69 Charger race car replica, a 1978 Warranty replacement 440 Short Block that I picked up for $600. This was a zero time, never been run motor, that I picked up here in Denver still strapped to the shipping pallet. It was an old Dealer close out clearance back in the 80's that my friend had in his garage. I had to add cam, heads, timing chain, intake, crank balancer (cast style) great deal! The motor may be of greater value to a 68 Mopar muscle car owner who is missing his original block but would love a 68 model year unstamped warranty block as the next best thing for his car providence.

Are you were refering to his '68 Block as a warranty block? If so, I guess that could work...In my original post, I thought you were refering to your '78 440 block..
