Location: Upper East Tennessee | I bought this intake and noticed a strange fitting on it that I have never seen. When I removed it I found it's actually some sort of thermal well. So, it must have contained some sort of temperature sensor. Is it original or not?

Location: Wilmington, Delaware, USA | With a first glance at your pic, I thought you were referring to the "L" shaped do-hickey thing where the carb mates to the intake. I've never seen that before. Same for the fitting that you are asking about, which I presume is on the front of the intake. I do know that the temp sensors are water based and are plumbed into the water passage close to the water pump. As for your fitting, it doesn't appear to match the OEM vacuum fitting at the rear of the intake, so, I'm wondering if it is some sort of homemade auxiliary vacuum port.

I wouls say the same thing and it dosent look factory. Some one put that there for a vacuum hookup |

Location: Upper East Tennessee | The "L" shaped fitting on the intake came directly off of a '58 Windsor 354 poly. My '57 DeSoto has the draft tube crankcase ventilation system and I will be changing it over to a PCV system. I am using the factory parts from the Windsor.
As far as the mystery plug, since it is a shallow thermowell it is sealed as is. It would have been used for some sort of temperature measurment but who in their right mind would be measuring temperature in the Fuel/Air duct? I too think it must be some aftermarket thing that someone installed...possibly thinking they were tapping into the coolant jacket instead of the Fuel/Air passage.

| Maybe a retrofitted PCV loop? My '58 B 350 has such a hack-job, probably rigged up when California mandated them. About 1962 ,I think?

Lots of states required that certain years be retrofitted with emissions devices, a lot of intakes were drilled and tapped in situ for fittings and then plugged years later...that's what the pic in the OP looks like to me. |
