OK... I committed a cardinal sin.

The end of last season, I installed a a rebuilt clock in the dash of my 59 Dodge "WITHOUT" pulling the battery.
OK... OK... I have it comming so let me have it...

I'll wait... go ahead.

OK, now that you're all done laughing.... yeah... a screwdriver made contact somewhere back there and ZAP ! POP ! ... and now I have no Lights, Horn or Wipers.

Do the 59 Dodges have "fusable link" ? , or does most of those accessories run through the Light Switch?

The car runs fine, and it still has working signals. the Amp gage works.   I'm in the middle of pulling the instrument cluster now... ( battery disconnected, of course ) to try and troubleshoot this. but a little assistance diagnosing this ( after the lauhter subsides ) would be nice.

Let the games begin.

...Are you listening, Bengt?

On any clock-work, disconnect the battery.

I dunno if you like Chinese cooking, Bart, but you might have some Fried Wires waiting for you, behind the dash,

You will know more once you get the dash pulled Bart. All these accessories do not run thru the light switch. At least on my 64, The Studs on the amp guage are used as the "Tie point" or connecting point for most of the 12 vots that are in or fed thru the dash, IE clock, cigarettette lighter, Headlights etc---wherever there is a switch on the dash, it is most likely fed, via the amp guage. I would inspect the wiring directly to the amp guage, it is possible one of the wires separated from it's mounting Stud that goes to the gauge.
I suspect the 59 wiring is very similar but I havent had the guts to pull the dash on the 59 as everybody tells me , "It's a Real Bear"--------is it as bad as they say???
If you were Extremely unlucky you may have blown the "Ballast" for the amp guage, but I tend to doubt it as you sahy it works--does that mean it shows charge and discharge both?
Someday, I do wanna pull the dash on my 59 and fix my clock and also hook up the amp guage so it shows charge, and not just discharge---the seller never did it as He didnt know how to hook up the amp guage to the Alternator.
Good Luck, once you have the dash panel out, it should be easier to help you trace down the problem. My guess is the screwdriver hit one of the studs on the amp guage.

so this amp gage just has the main power lead loop passively around the back of the instrument, like its inductive or something. I expected to see posts and hard connect points, but no such luck That explains why the amp gage still worked. Still... there is a broken connection somewhere. Its just a matter of finding it. So far no fried wires. As soon as the Oil gage is free I'll be able to get more of the cluster to where I can see it all.

Bart , To free up movement on the Oil Gauge, Remove the Oil Pipe, From memory it is a 7/16. I removed mine recently to also get the Clock out.. I cannot remember if there are any fuses on the back of the dash though, I believe the Clock has a independant fuse on the back of it, So there may be others lurking around there..

Oil Gage disconnected, Amp gage pulled from the cluster, all switches removed from the panel
It's all wide open
No fried wires, and no fuses to be found.
I have power thru the ignition switch and to the major stud on the back of the headlight switch
AUX ( pink ) on back of light switch is working - ( constant power.) Instrument lights ( orange ) work with lights pulled.
and that is about it......

Well I was completely wrong about the wiring being similar to my 64, I actually like the way they did the amp gauge in the 59 better. A Schematic or wiring diagram would really help at this point in time.
There was a "Brit Bloke" that posted this in 2009:
" I have a large selection of materials that also come with the car:
Original Manual
Reproduction copy of manual
Original Dodge Fabric swatch chart from 1959
Original Sherwin-Williams 1959 Dodge paint chip color chart
Original Ditzler 1959 Dodge paint chip color chart
Assorted wiring diagrams and schematics".

Maybe He still have some of those wiring diagrams and Schematics¿

Wellllll, Do ya?

I just dug out the Service manual on CD and did a few screen captures of the wiring schematics, then opened themup in paint and color coded the wires. We have a color lazer printer at work. I'll be making copies tomorrow

Here's the wiring diagrams from my '59 dodge manual. It is a suppliment to the '58 manual so if you need any other info, let me know. I apologize if the image is a slight wavy, taking pics from my camera since the scanner is down. Can scan tomorrow if needed.

I downloaded all those schematics, they are great , thanks.
I will study them tomorrow, and see if I can find something that is
common to the lights , gauges, etc etc, I will also go back and read
your posts to what is "dead" and what is not.
Musta been a "bad week" for 59 Dodges.
I went to battery store, (where I have been going for many many years)
to get a new battery for my 59. I pulled on the parking brake and heard,
"Kind of a Twang" and then no resistance when I pulled the handle and
no parking brake. Had them put in the new battery, then headed to shop
where I always take car for repairs/modifications. I figured the cable had
somehow come loose.--Nope--their was a mounting bracket for it on the firewall
of the car, the bracked was rivited on(well it was till I pulled on the brake)
The rivits tore right out of the firewall--sheeshhh---anyway, but gonna secure it
with nuts and bolts, tomorrow.

I would take one circuit and start tracing where you have power and where you don't. I guess I would pick the headlights as I've had to do that on my Windsor before. I'm not sure if the dodges have the wire block on the radiator support, but it makes it easy to check. Do you have power at the switches of each of those accessories? What about on the ignition switch? When you turn the key back (acc) does anything come on?

I always disconnect the battery when doing elecrical work, i`m 46 yers old now and learn this when i was 16,

Bart, This problem you have with so many different sources of error, I BET you dont have the body grounded,
Easy test, with an voltmeter, between engine and body. turn on the light and watch if you get 12 volt on the voltmeter.

BTW, start with the horn, because it has its own elecrical system, and need ground on the steering wheel to work,

Awesome dude... Do you have power at the start of the wire going to the wipers? Do you have power at the end of the wire? Can you tell which one is the power? What are you stumped about it, I guess?

Honestly... since I don't run the car in the rain, its on the back burner... I still haven't adddressed the speedo pinion issue, tune-up and timing, and kickdown problems, plus that choke on start-up.... so for now I have bigger fish to fry.

After this weekends Graduation from HS of my youngest and one major Honey-Do item on my list of things, I may actually have time for the '59 later this summer.

I only started on the seats as a rainy day project to keep things moving.
