Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | I finally got a set of reproduction Chrysler style wire wheels, from Motorspot in California, and a set of Diamondback wide whites. Both the folks at Motorspot and Diamondback were very pleasant, helpful and friendly. I highly recommend both to deal with. The wheels are 15" rims, made in USA. The Diamondbacks are P235-75R15 Diamondback Furys. They make these with a standard whitewall width of 3" on this size tire but I specifically asked for 2 1/2 inches as I think 3" is too wide on these cars. What a difference these make to the look of the car! Diamondback takes brand names tire - in this case Cooper Tires - and vulcanizes a wide whitewall onto the sidewall so they will do pretty much any size you want. This is unlike Coker Tire which uses outdated molds bought from other manufacturers and makes "reproduction" tires under license. Been waiting for nearly 2 years to get this done. Those old 14 inch wheels, and undersized P215-75R14 narrow whitewall tires were just TOO small to do the car justice. These wheels completely fill out the fenders. The car also has a smoother ride than with the previous tires. Expert Posts: 1208 Location: SWITZERLAND | Ian, with you one more who discover, that 15" tires improves considerably the look of a FWL-Car, not only view from the sise, but as well from front and rear. How about the remaining space when turned the steering fully on one side? In this position and at a strong shock, the one side tire just not touch the fender. for this I had ti lift slightly the front suspension. Then you used 235-75-15 instead the ones on my Dodge 235-70-15, means your diameter, the circumference respectively will be increased to the Original 14" tires. How do you calibrate the odo-/speedometer accordingly? - SERGE -

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Serge, with my old 14 inch tires the speedometer was reading a little high, but now it is reading slightly low, about 4% off. When it reads 50 MPH I am doing about 52 MPH according to my Garmin GPS. This is negligible. I haven't had any clearance issues yet with the tires. The sales guy at Diamondback explained to me that the P235-75R15 tires with a height ( diameter ) of 28 1/2 inches are about the same height as the old optional 900 X 14s on this car.

Not only the smoothness, but the cornering response should be much better with the DB's. And, then, there's their appearance......! Don't forget to experiment with the tire pressures, too, to maximize the handling and the MPG. I'm running a tad over 40psi in my 14" DB's. Edited by d500neil 2010-05-22 4:23 PM

Expert Posts: 1208 Location: SWITZERLAND | I have put a white adhesive tape on painting your side molding, matching to the roof and the white walls. There are weatherproof tapes, removable at any time - just an idea? - SERGE - (IMG_0371.jpg) Attachments ---------------- IMG_0371.jpg (140KB - 120 downloads)

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Actually the side moulding insert, and roof are painted a very pale blue, not white. The white would look better, I agree. Any volunteers to come over and paint the roof and insert? The car is NOT painted stock 1960 Chrysler colors. Edited by imopar380 2010-05-22 5:08 PM

You have a VERY nice looking car I usually am not a fan of the wire wheels (I love plain steelies) but they look sharp on you car - I think the color helps the over- all look

Expert Posts: 1208 Location: SWITZERLAND | Ray - 2010-05-23 12:32 AM Ian, I have the same size tires on my 61 and have not run into any clearance problems in 10 years. At steering wheel turned fully to the left, then driving backwards down the border of a sidewalk, it happened once that the right tire touched the edge of the right front fender, bending the inner fold a little bid down. Comparing the1960 Saratoga with a 1959 Dodge, the clearance seems to be identical. A small difference of course can change a lot. Or the section of the tires I use are more rectangular. - SERGE - Edited by sermey 2010-05-23 2:39 AM

Now how about lowering it 1" all around?! That is amazing- I was actually a little concerned about the tire size - being P235 - but they just fit. I actually think P225-75R15 would be a better fit but these are just fine. The P225-75R15 tires are about 27 1/2 inches high which is what the original optional 900X14s were on this car. Imagine that. What the car had on it when I got it was P215-75R14 which were too small - more like a 700X14. Good for say a 57 Chebby but not a mighty Chrysler !

Expert Posts: 1530 Location: ZH, Switzerland | Ian, wonderful pictures of your very nice 60 Saratoga. I guess /w the 235/70R15 the speedometer would be accurate. My 1956 New Yorker originally war running on 8.00-15 bias tires. According Diamondback the right size for my car is 235/75R15. But I guess I'll go /w 235/70R15 because only this size offers a "H" speed index. In Switzerland it's strictly prohibited to run a tire/speedometer gear combination that causes a faster speed than indicated at the speedometer (zero tolerance).

My speedometer is now reading about 6% lower than actual, as tested by my Garmin GPS. When my speedo reads 50 MPH, my Garmin says 53 MPH, so its not a huge difference. With the old tires the speedo was reading a bit higher than actual.

Ian, ... this FINNED monster in stunning TURQUOISE oughta be worth keeping around for at least 50 ! Well, Doc, I happen to love the look of the 62s. 63 and 64 not so much but I do like the 62s an awful lot even without the fins! I like Cordobas, too, don't have a coronary As for this car, yeah, I'll have it for quite a while, but 50 years would put me over 100! This one keeps me busy with the little details. The only thing I might possibly get rid of this for would be a 300-F but I don' t see that happening any time soon! And, there are likely more 300-Fs around than Saratoga 2 door hardtops. This car is lucky it didn't get dismantled for an "F" restoration back in the 90s.... being a rust free L.A. car it would have made a perfect body donor. I guess nobody "discovered" it, and apparently it was with the original owner until 2006 or so from what I was told... but not verified. Location: Parts Unknown | I suppose you have a K-car fetish too ? You are a sick, sick man, Ian. But we love you anyway. Actually, I like Cordobas too. I'd never own one, but a nicely preserved unit is nice to see. I consider 57-58 cars to be the zenith of design. All others are, by degrees, lesser cars. It doesn't mean I don't like them, .... they just ain't top shelf material ! Some I might like enough to own, but most I am just pleased that someone else will love them and make them available to me as visual stimulation. As you know, these things take a lot of work. We have to be somewhat selective in what we commit ourselves too. BTW - I'd take that Saratoga of yours over the everpresent 300F ANY day ! Why be predictable ? Go for the seldom seen one. I am not current with my WPC membership. Too busy building the shop. That meet is on a weekend I have a prior commitment.
