Member Posts: 7 | I recently acquired a 61 DeSoto 4 dr HT, and am trying to find out how to decode the VIN on this thing, It has a VIN # of 6113112422. does anyone have the magic decoder ring to verify where in the line this production number places this car? I figured with only 2100+ 4 doors built it should be easy enough to glean from the VIN. But have been unable to find anything that matched these numbers in any way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jafo

Thanks Jafo 6113112422 6 - DeSoto 1 - (base series. non-wagon) 1 - 1961 model year 3 - Jefferson Avenue plant 112422 - 12,422nd 1961 car off the Jefferson Avenue line. The 12,422 cars would include all Chrysler Newports, Chrysler Windsors, Chrysler New Yorkers and DeSotos, regardless of body style. (1961 Imperials were built at the ex-Graham/DeSoto plant on Warren Avenue.) 1959 was the last year Chrysler used sequential production numbers based on the prefix of the VIN. Starting in 1960, and continuing even today, the first car off the line was 100001, the second car 100002, the one thousandth, 101000, etc. There is no way to determine production by body style on American-built unibody cars. You can on Canadian-built Chryco cars built before 1966.
