Seems pretty obvious when comparing the pictures above but I've never been a fan of the Marlin. The Norseman looks better though...................I think, anyway.

I saw this photo (below) in the Car Spotting thread for the first time and recognized the Marlin roof grafted onto the Plymouth (think Frankenstein's monster) and said to myself, "You know what? That Marlin roof reminds me of the Norseman show car (that sank to the bottom of the ocean in the Andrea Doria sinking)".

I have spoken to a few of the guys that actually worked in Detroit
as styling designers in the 50's and 60's. ALL were very dedicated
to their profession and were consumed with digesting all things design
related, both past and present.

I do not doubt for a moment that anyone in that line of work was not
the same and spent all their personal and professional time looking at
other peoples' work and ideas. Since Exner was something of a bright
star in the trade at the time, there is no reason to think any designers
over at AMC had not seen the Norseman photos and had that idea rattling
around in their heads.

AMC was a pathetic company, in terms of innovation and performance/
design. They put ALL their emphasis on frugal buyers and kept a strong
concentration of LSD in the water cooler. The Marlin might have worked,
had it not been cursed by being wrapped around a drab old Rambler ! It
is a wonder to me that AMC lasted as long as they did, building such a long
string of bizarrely styled and underperforming cars. Today, I think they
are neat, because one so rarely sees them. I was just looking at an early
Pacer yesterday ! But back in the day, they were just plain ugly, compared
to what the other U.S. car mfrs. were coming up with.
