The fella who had this Plymouth brand new kept all his paper work on the car, insurance, vehicle specs, bill of sale, owners manual and its all in great shape, the vin/serial number matches up with the car i have still in my garage, its all the name owners name on every paper. I just thought I would share this and see what some of you thought or if any of you ever had the original paper work dating back to when it was sold brand new

Very nice. You don't see documentation this complete for cars this old much anymore. You're lucky if you have the owners manual and the service certificate usually.

After 57 years it was very fortunate that this complete set of documents survived and had not been dispersed or destroyed. Very rare to find this for any car.

Very interesting!! But, I have to wonder what the "Canada Customs" paperwork was all about. It wasn't as if the car was being exported?!!

The delivery routes from Windsor to western Canada went through the USA. That´s the only explanation I can think of.

In fact, there's a collection of pictures on the net of new 58 canadian cars (Mayfairs and Regents) on delivery trucks, all photographed at a truck stop in Erskine, Minnesota, USA.

Here they are:

One wonders why the factory didn't use rail shipment to the western provinces more. I would have thought that would have cost less than shipping the cars by truck, especially when they had to come through the USA. Even to this day I'll bet Canada doesn't have that extensive a road network.

Fantastic Canadian documentation! I wonder if those letters were hand typed? Can you post a photo of the car? I don't recall seeing it.

I had no ideal Auto Clearing had been around that long! I think they're still in business today are they not?

That's a cool set of documentation. I'm kind of speechless to see the whole set intact!

It's interesting to see the price..... quite a difference in Canada. That car sold for over $700.00 more than a base zero option Fury did in USA.

That IS as good as it gets.
I wished I knew how to track my car back to the dealership/orig. owner but I am probably luckier than most as my car spend many years in storage and all the owners sence it came out seemed to show some interest in documentation. The glove box was full of stuff. The earliest I found was for 3/20/62 and the note simply said it was bought 1/20/61 with the milage of 14,046 and then listed the tires this person put on and the ser#s of the tires. I found an insurance card and a booklet of Pa. MOPAR dealerships from 1959 with the ins. card, the owners name & address in 1962. A copy of the title exchange in 1985 of the same owner in 1962 and the person that pulled this low milage wagon out of the barn. I found an article from Sept. 1988 Rod & Custom with the guys name that pulled it out of the barn in Pa., with a picture of my car telling how he spent a lot of time doing cosmetic repairs to get it on the road. There are papers from a paint shop listing the colors for the car and paint codes for 1997[which are no longer available]. A copy of the title when the owner I bought it from purchased it. There was a 1960 dealers catalog from Radnor Motors a Plymouth dealer. MIGHT be where is was sold but I no way of knowing. Radnor Motors no longer exists. There was a nice owners manual. A bunch of oil change stickers from the 80s & 90s with milage. I kept the ad from the Auto Locator as I found it, my registrations and a copy of my title. I know it spent some time in N.Y. as I found an insurance card and an unused N.Y. inspection sticker from 1999 with my cars ser. # on it and the owners name and more.
2 things I wish, I wish I could find. 1st. The original owner or at least where it was sold. 2nd. Right around when I first bought it, I went on-line to get info on the Chryslers at Carlisle and the opening page had my car as the cover but I can't find it again. I would like to see and make a copy that.
I think I am luckier than most but you hit the jackpot!
Oh, one last thing about the owner prior to me. I saw the ad and figured I had nothing to do on a Sat. so I took the long drive down to Elkton, Md. When I pulled into his drive with my 67 GTO, he came out and said "I know you" and told me where he used to live, just a few hundred yards from my house. I didn't remember him, but when his very attractive wife came out, I said "I know her". I'd never foreget her, she used to mow her lawn in a bikini.

Basically, Collector Car insurance is similar to Life insurance.

You pick your policy limits and the company basically looks at the car and decides if it wants to assume the Risk of your loss(es) and to
accept your policy premiums.

Usually, the Company will insist on various limitations on the usage and garaging of your car, so that they limit and reduce the possibility
of their ever having to pay out anything (claims) against your policy.

Life insurance companies also base their rates on your age, your family history, whether you smoke or jump out of airplanes, hang-glide,
or rob banks, etc.

Collector Car insurance sells EGO appeal (and limitations on the usage/enjoyment of your car).

They had to ship through the US if they were going by truck. The Trans-Canada Highway still had a few gaps here and there in 1958, as well some non-paved sections. They could leave Windsor, cross into the U.S., head west to Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and up to Winnipeg or Regina.

The Customs paperwork is for a trip to the U.S. and not connected to shipping the car to Saskatoon. Look closely at the photo and you can see a Customs stamp on the document dated May 31, 1962. Another Customs document is the one where you stopped at the border and had Canadian Customs do a quick check of the vehicle. Note on the form they had a spot to record the serial number of non-Canadian tires on a car leaving Canada for a trip to the U.S.

My father borrowed his younger brother's four month old 1948 Studebaker to make a trip with my mother to Minneapolis. I guess he did not have much faith in his 1936 Graham Supercharger making the trip - or finding parts if he broke down. The radio box was not ticked on the form for the Studebaker and when he came back Customs would take that form and recheck the car. When in Minneapolis he picked up a new Studebaker radio for the car and brought it back to Canada. As the radio was new and in the box, he was charged duty and tax on the value of the radio. If the radio had been installed in the car in Minneapolis, he would have had to pay duty and taxes on the cost of the installation as well. And had he tried to bring the radio installed across the border without declaring the radio or installation, the nice Customs men at the border would have impounded the car, added the value of the car to the amount subject to the duties and taxes as well as some fines, etc.

A friend of mine tried that in the 1970's - buying and installing a new stereo in his new van in the U.S. and not declaring his purchase. He got caught when the Customs men checked his glovebox and found the stereo's owner's guide, warranty papers, etc. - in English only. If the unit had been purchased in Canada, all the paperwork would have been in English and French. (By this time Customs had dropped the vehicle inspection form when leaving Canada.) So, they impounded the truck, charged import duties and taxes on the total value of the van, including radio and installation, and advised him when his hearing would be. When he asked how he was to get home to Winnipeg from the border, he was advised the next Greyhound to Winnipeg would be coming through in a couple of hours.

In this case the total bill came to around $2,000. But in the end they waived the import duties and taxes, etc. on the value of the truck and he had to pay a couple hundred dollars in duties, etc. on the radio as well as fines.

That corresponds with an encounter that I had in 1985 with a distinctly unfriendly Canada customs agent across the river from Detroit. I had intended to drive home to Wisconsin from the WPC Show by way of a leisurely cruise up Lake Huron on the Ontario side. I then would cross back into the United States at Sault Ste. Marie MI and take US 2/41 back west across the U.P. to Wisconsin. A simple plan and one that I thought wouldn't get me into trouble. Unfortunately I hadn't reckoned on getting a knob as a customs agent. I knew I was in trouble when he motioned me over to the side of the road where he couild conduct a thorough search of my car. I had picked up a few things at the WPC Swap meet as had my companion and they were in the car. We were intending to use those things when we got home and we had no earthly notion of selling any of them while we were in Canada. The customs agent was very suspicous though and just about called me a liar and asked if I wouild appreciate it if he impouded my car for smuggling contraband. I said I wouildn't like it very much to be honest. We went back and forth for a time but he finally relented and let us go. I really don't know what got him going in the first place unless it was the old Ontairo license tag I had picked up at the swap meet as a curio for my license plate collection. I wasn't planning on robbing a bank in Canada and using the tag to throw the police off the scent, I swear! Knob.   Fortunately the people in Canada were more friendly once I got away from the border.

Thankfully you had a better experience once you'd entered Canada. I've had some run-ins with stupid Canadian customs agents myself. It really ticks me off when I hear these stories from Americans. I expect full courtesy from these guys when American citizens come to Canada for vacation. Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen.

On an alternative note, I have to say that I've always been treated with respect and reasonableness from the US CBP guys. You know it's funny, when I drove to California in January to see John Fowlie, I had tools, workboots and coveralls in my pickup. I told the guy at the border crossing right up front, and why I was there. I'd brought some documentation about my Fury, and a printout from John's website. I was expecting a full search because of my work gear (I brought it because John will let you pull your own small odds and ends). I'd brought copies of my last paystub, my last month of utility bills, and the deed to my house just in case they wanted proof that I had compelling reasons to leave the USA. As it turns out, I never even had to get out of my truck; he CBP didn't seem that concerned with me and the he agent wished me good luck and a safe trip there. He never asked to see any of the other documentation I brought.

What an attitude difference between countries. That being said upon re-entering Canada, the customs guys were pretty reasonable this time. I gave them John's invoice and a brief explanation that if your into 50's Chrysler products, you at very least know of John, and after a brief declaration of my 18 pack of Coor's beer, let me though with no issue.
