Location: Under the X in Texas | These are not the '60-62 castings. These are the far more common '63 and '64 short rams from the 300J and 300K. The early short rams have different part numbers which are cast on the under side. '60-62 are hot water heated at the carb bases. '63-64 are exhaust heated.

Location: Under the X in Texas | 60crossram - 2015-06-14 6:14 PM Don't you mean 60-62 are exhaust heated at the base ? My comment is about '60-62 short rams. They are engine hot water heated at the carb bases. '60-61 long rams are exhaust heated. For 1962 there were no long rams available. Pic attached is through the left side wheel well of a '60 300F short ram car. Note the brass plate with brass water tubes running in and out carrying hot water through. The brass is painted intake manifold red. Partly additionally illustrated are the '60-62 headers for the short ram cars which, of course, have no bung provision to provide exhaust heat to intakes.

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | It should be clarified that not all 300's of 60-62 had the water heated short rams...right? Here in Texas....it's hard to get enthused about anything that puts heat into the intake. It'll get plenty hot all by itself... Of course the exhaust method is superior from the standpoint of functionality.....exhaust gas gets hot a lot faster than the coolant.

Location: Under the X in Texas | Correct, all the standard production cars in '60 (300F) and '61 (300G) were 375 HP long ram equipped. Standard '62 (300H) had inline dual quads and was rated 380 HP. There were nine 1960 300Fs with short rams, 400HP and included the Pont-a-Mousson 4 speed manual. There was one 1961 300G with short rams, 400HP and the taxi 3 speed manual I don't have a number for the 1962 300H cars with short rams and 405HP Yes, the water heated rams were very slow to get circulating and adequately hot. Factory engineer Paul Mallwitz spoke to the 300 Int'l club once about that experience in Daytona when the multiple 300F cars got everyone out of bed at the motel and yelling at them to shut the dang things off or get out, so they drove out on the beach!

Elite Veteran Posts: 827 Location: tailFinland | Was short rams really an option for average Joe buying F or G or was them just for the factory supported race cars? I mean nine Fs and seven of them raced at Daytona in 1960. Sure these cars ended up to end users after their race career and are very rare cars but can we say "300F and G was available with short rams"? If i remembered right these modifications (rams ans transmissions) were done at the shop not at the assembly line, so short ram cars were born as a regular cars. Am I right? Bottom of the waterheated and exhaust heated rams look similar, is there any sicnificant difference between 60-62 and 63-64 rams other than casting numbers?

Expert Posts: 2524 Location: Houston | Yeah...I'm guessing they are the same manifold with just a different plate bolted to the bottom, one for exhaust, one for water.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8445 Location: Perth Australia | So, if you set up a set of rams and didnt have the exhaust manifolds, there is nothing wrong with plumbing the coolant to flow through them instead?

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | Or just leave them open. Engine heat will radiate up from the heads through the intake-arms and the carbbowl gets warmed up from the exhaust manifolds over time. Although I'm sure with coolant the warm-up of the bowls will be quicker. Personally I would run a 160 Thermostat with that setup to prevent fuel to boil and turn into a partial vapour in the carb bowls causing vapourlock. On my own longrammed car I'm actually looking into cooling the bowls a bit as the shorty headers and the aluminium Edelbrock heads sure radiate a lot of heat into the engine bay. Everything eventually gets very warm under the hood. Cold air induction and improved engine bay ventilation are the things I'm looking into at the moment. Ever since I installed a roller cam in the stroker engine it will ping when (underhood) operating temps are reached. Edited by BigBlockMopar 2015-06-18 9:10 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Wow, I didn't know they had those coolant short rams in 60-61. Actually the coolant thing on the intakes for all the long rams is news to me. I agree, they sure wouldn't heat up the chokes very fast. Ma-Mopar sure did some strange things. A lot we never her about. But thanks to you all !!! Chrysler lives !!!
