Wanna get wit 'cha, and take ya pict'cha....

I took a few pictures today, namely of the trunk that we FINALLY got open today. I posted this under the "what did you do to your car today", but thought I might post a separate thread for those who had been following our car with interest (and might not have seen it there). I guess my old thread had been archived, so I started a new one.

I saved myself $60 today by forgoing the locksmith on getting into my trunk. Turns out, a key (possibly the original) was broken off inside the trunk lock, and the lock was jammed. It appeared that someone else had tried the flat head & hammer method on the lock once we pried the cylinder sleeve (?) off. Long story short... we got it open. Unfortunately we didn't find any buried treasure or untold riches amongst the misc. garbage, but we did find the original oil-bath air cleaner, two hubcaps (no idea what car they're from), trim & color insert for the front fender, and a few other pieces of mystery parts. I'll have to post some pictures so we can all play "Name That Part" again.

Anyhow, here are the pictures. This week I'll be making the trek to NAPA to pick up my lower radiator hose, battery, and fuel/oil filters (thanks to some profits on a yard sale I had on Sat). Hopefully more progress to follow this weekend.

Jessica

Doc, are they anodized in the ribs? The other hubcap, while not quite as bold in color, is definitely not shiny here, and looks as though whatever color may have been there had faded away. Perhaps the bronzy/gold color on the other cap is stained through rust? I wasn't sure. Perhaps you know someone w/ a 58 Desoto who might be able to tell me.

WoW! Rear a/c!
I've heard those units would really freeze out the rear passengers!
Wish my Forward Looks had factory a/c! These 100 degree days are driving me crazy.

I think it was more like a gold paint on a slightly roughed-up surface. Can stainless be anodized ?

The little symbols on the pie plate surface were gold too.

I am really pleased to see you taking such an interest in this DeSoto of yours. The color arrangement
is VERY unusual for a Coronado.

Well, they appear to be fairly decent. Anyone in need of them, let me know. I am short 1 hubcap for my car, so a trade would be nice.

I wish I had the funds and skills to move along better, but it wouldn't be much of a learning experience, I suppose. We're trying to push things along a little more quickly right now as the flack from our housing office is starting to become very tiresome. Lets hope she'll run this weekend.

I don't think I have a single 55 in my heap, or I'd just send you one. I'll ask around.

I am sure someone here could use those 58's. I have more than I want ..... don't really
like them ! .... kinda boring !

Dr. DeSoto beat me to it. Yes, these are 1958 DeSoto wheel covers. I have all of mine so I don't need yours. I can't tell you about the apparent gold sheen on one of them. Mine does not have that detail.

Found an arm rest in the trunk, too. The rest of the misc. pieces I put into the bucket are still under investigation.

When you restore your DeSoto, are you planning a modern R-134A refrigerant freon conversion for your car's A/C system?

I haven't really given it much thought since it is so far down the road. That's a very strong possibility, though. I haven't done any research on this.

Chaney,

I've never found cash or the like in a trunk before... maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. LOL

I was surprised, too. Considering how much rat feces was also in the trunk, it survived pretty well. There was A LOT of nesting material in the crevice between the trunk floor and the quarter panel, too. Seems unaffected, though. That is treasure enough for me!

Jess, you might want to be VERY careful in respirating enclosed air that contains mouse droppings.

Don't know if the Hantavirus has been transported to TX, yet, but if you come down with flu-like symptoms
several days after being in respiratory contact with mouse droppings, get thee to the ER, asap!

I wore a face mask, Neil. Both in cleaning the inside of the car and in the trunk. I didn't want to breathe in any dust or rust particles, either.

Jessica,
I noticed your trunk light hanging down in the picture. Mine did that for a few years as well. Inside that little gem is a gravity or mercury switch that only works if the light is assembled into the proper position in the truck lid. I used a backup light in mine as it fit the socket and was the only 6v lamp that I had around to fit. I disassembled the lamp to try and figure out how it works only to find that the switching mechanism is completely sealed. I managed to work it back and forth a couple dozen times so that began to work properly again while mounted in the vehicle. The key being to make sure that it does not get stuck ON and drain your battery.

I have yet to find a new replacement for them.

Hey that's a very good looking car you got there ,looks like it's solid too that's a big plus for sure! If you plan on changing over freon from r 12 to 134 a ,it will have to have a differant orffice tube filter -valve cos it's rated to flow diff. from the r 12, it will also take less of the 134 a then it hold of the r-12 to get a full charge .You'll have to replace the drier and flush the system out because the two freons can't be mixed....along with flushing the compressor and changing the oil to the right 134-a pag oil it also comes in three differant wt. not sure which wt it sure take...maybe somebody else here has already done it and can chime in to let us know...it's also nice to see another forwardlooker lady on here like myself maybe if there becomes enought of us we can become pink Ha!! Keep us posted .
