Location: Edmonton, Alberta | I truly never thought this day would come!! I'm just eleated to tell everyone that on Saturday, a 1957 Plymouth Fury has now found a new home in my Garage! She's a tastfuly resto-moded car, that was restored from the frame up in 2007. The car is correct as far as color, interior and so on, but has a big block mopar V8 engine, and a 727 transmission. The car also has mag wheels, instead of correct wheels and tires.
Although cash isn't something I'm currently rolliing in after this weekend, my first challenges will be to find correct rims, wheel covers and tires for her, and a proper radio and bezel. I'd like to get the correct drivetrain, but this will be something that will come down the road.
I've got a ton of question for the group, which I'll get into at a later date, but I just had to get this post in. I just couldn't be happier right now!
OK, well, two questions for right now. I have some photos I'd like to post, but they're too big. Anyone know how to "downsize" photos so that they can be posted here?
Also, in my "internet" travels, I came across someone who has written/published/selling an authenticity manual for '57 and '58 Furys. Does anyone recall seeing this website or publication?

Location: Parts Unknown | If you have photos on your editing program, you will have the option to downsize them. I use
the given 4:3 aspect ratio and size them at 640 x 480 and they load just fine. Hope that helps.
Happy you found THE car for you .... at least I assume that is what you are implying. I would
do just like you say you are doing .... get it looking right and then look for drivetrain while using
what's in it.

Location: hopkinsville, kentuckky | That's a honey, and lots of folks on here would be very proud to own such a car. The wheels are nice, and someone on here may be able to trade you out of them for some 'stockers', and maybe even the correct hubcaps. I would suggest the wire wheels, but in truth, those were discontined after the 56 model year. Nice car! If that drivetrain works just like it is, and it is smooth and reliable, then it is time to just enjoy the car. |

Nice looking Fury. The restorer must not have liked the bumper wings, as they were standard on all '57-'58 Furys.
The Golden Fin Society has been working on an authenticity manual, but I haven't heard if they had it completed.

You're right, she'll need proper rims and hubcaps, though those chrome rims are not too ugly - would do just nicely while you search for the correct ones. If its a 727 pushbutton trans, I would leave the drivetrain as it is. |

Glad you're going back to stock looks. There ain't many cars out there more beautiful than a 1957 Plymouth Fury!!

I'm a little bit anal wth my opinions about restoring cars to stock, so I might drive some of you nuts...lol! That sand dune white paint job is safe with me. I did not know that bumper wings were stock, so I guess that will have to hit the "correction agenda" as well. After lurking around this site a while, these bumper wings are quite hard to find are they not? Will they fit on my bumper the way it is or did the bumper wings require a different bumper? Also, were power brakes optional on a Fury? I guess the next step is to order information from Chrysler to see exactly what was what when my car left the assembly plant. |

The bumper wings will bold right up to your bumper. I think there is an additional bracket on each front wing that mounts to the body.
While you are looking for parts, you'll need a pair of the stone shields that sit in front of the rear wheel wells. These are '57 only. The '58s are different.

Location: Connecticut | A good way to find out what was stock on your 57 Fury is to buy a 57 Fury sales brochure from ebay or a local swap meet. The 1957 Plymouth Fury Restorer's Guide is a new publication by Marv Raguse, who worked as an engineer for Chrysler from the 1960s on. It is self-published. I would recommend the publication based on knowing Marv. Cost is 29.95 + $5 shipping. You can contact him at: 2710 Stoney Creek Rd., Oakland, MI 48363 or email: MJRAGUSE@aol.com. He is presently running an ad for this in The Plymouth Bulletin, BTW.

Yes bumper wings were stock on Furys,they are somewhat hard to find now and usually bring around $1,000 up per set depending on condition of course.
If your car still has the original bumpers they will have the extra mounting holes for the wings,if the bumpers were changed for the smooth wingless look you will need to drill additional holes to mount the wings.
I think some of the members here might have a template for adding the additional holes.

I'll have to go have a peek at the back bumper to see mounting holes are there. If not, I'll have to check into the template when a set of bumper wings and I cross paths. |

That is a very nice car just the way it is . Personally, I would not spend the money to obtain nice bumper wings . I like them just fine on other peoples cars , but not on my own....................MO

OEM-option, but the plain bumper ends make for a much more clean, stream-lined appearance for the car.

I think the grille on his car is indeed gold anodized, although the pic posted up there could make it seem otherwise. Looking carefully at the side, though, where the grille wraps "inside" the fender, it clearly looks gold.
As the owner says that he wants the car back to bone stock condition and the Furys came standard with the wings, I don't think the question of whether it looks better or not with or without them is relevant.... That said, I think the wings look perfect on '57 Plymouths! |

Location: Edmonton, Alberta | On the subject of bumper wings, were they optional on all FL cars, or at least, all FL Plymouths? Were they the same for '57 and '58? Could a guy get lucky and come across a 4-dr Plaza with bumper wings? Maybe closer to home, and closer to what I might stumble across, were these optional on Canadian Plodges too? (Crusader, Regent, Mayfair)? If they were, that would open up the possiblily relm. I've ordered the service manual and the parts book from Faxon, so maybe when those arrive, they might help answer some questions. |

The wings are the same for those two years.
You may get lucky and find a set on a parts car somewhere,but i've never had such luck,nowadays with the internet and eBay it's harder to find deals on certain parts.

Location: Parts Unknown | You are more likely to have seen the wings on higher end models. Those types buying el cheepo cars
did not tend to lather them up with options. That's not to say it never happened, but I have seen far
more wings on Belvederes than Savoys and Plazas combined. In fact, I cannot recall EVER seeing a
Plaza with wings.
No help on the Canuck model idea. We see VERY few of those where I live !

Location: Montreal, Canada | I don't think the bumper wings were available at all in Canada, not with Dodge and not even for Plymouth (except for the specially imported Furys, of course).
The Canadian Plymouth and Dodge litterature I've seen does not list the bumper wings as an option and never illustrates the cars with them.
A pair of front ones just popped up on eBay today..

I'm going to have to wait on the bumper wings, they're going to be out of my budget right now; proper radios, proper wheels and tires must come first, and then get that engine back to what it's supposed to be (or as close as is reasonable). The discussion about the bumper wings has taught me a great deal. Not only was I not aware of the back ones were standard, I didn't know there was such a thing for the fronts, and that they were standard equipment too!!! And I thought I knew a thing or two about 57-58 Plynouths!..LOL! It's also interesting that the Canadian models didn't have the wings at all. So much for my hopes of finding a set in a junkyard on my side of the 49th.

It's such a great movie, there is even a scene with a woman chasing a woman on foot in her, Dodge convertible if I'm remembering right, but it's a must see. The Golden Fin Society is very helpful for finding information on these rare cars, but so is this group here.
