My dad graduated high school in 1964 from Waterford Union High School and went off to college the following fall to the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, about a 45 minute drive on two lane county and state highways then and to this day. My dad was the only son of my grandparents and was expected to come home on weekends to help on their dairy farm in Waterford, but my dad didn't have a car so my grandparents would pick him up. Well, one Friday afternoon rolled around and my dad was left stranded in the rain for a couple of hours as my grandmother, who was a graded school teacher, was hung up at school for some reason. Any way, my dad grew annoyed and impatient so he went down to the local used car dealer where he had noticed the '56 Savoy earlier in the week. The price tag at the time was $65 as the straight 6 had a rod knock and the dealer just wanted it gone. My dad talked the dealer down to $40 and drove the car home as is.

The next day after chores were done, my dad's friend Jerry came over and they beat the crap out of the car out in the cow pasture until the rod blew out the side of the block. They pulled the car to a clear area to work on it and got as far and pulling the motor before they said the hell with it. Then they went back to the house, grabbed a couple of shot guns and shot the living crap out of the car to the point where it was hardly recognizable. The car and engine block remained decaying on the family farm until just this last year when it sold, the new owner had a steel scrapper haul off the old Savoy and a 1937 Dodge stake bed truck that was also rotting in the pasture (the 1937 Dodge truck was parked in 1956 when the local sheriff told my grandfather that the truck wasn't safe for highway use). I've never known of such fun as buying a car for $40 and driving it until it blew up and then shooting the hell out of it, but it sounds like a great time! I'll post some pictures of the car from a couple of years ago once I gather them up, pretty impressive.

On a side note, as a kid I used to snoop around the old junk on the farm and one day with my brother we kicked over an old brake drum off the Savoy to uncover a huge yellow jacket nest. We were each stung about 30 times and even though it hurt like hell at the time it is still one of my favorite memories.

Hehehehe ! Kinda like the time we killed our neighbor with a pitchfork and buried him in the
swamp. Still a favorite memory for me too!

Or the time my little brother lost an eye when that mule bit him. Good times !
