This is a stupid question maybe, but where the hell is the lightbulb in a 1959 Plymouth pushbutton unit and how do you change it?

...mine just gave out tonight and I removed the bezel around the pushbuttons, explored under the dash, but I didn't see any light bulb... Where is it?

There should be a bulb socket mounted to the push button assembly, between the 'forks' that the green plastic buttons attach to. I'm assuming this based on the way my 59 Dodge push buttons are set up.

Thanks! Ok, so I'd have to pull out the buttons to access this? Maybe that's why I didn't see any bulb.. Too tired to try it out tonight, I'll get at it again tomorrow.

The bulb is internal, look for an orange wire feeding it. You should be able to access it by removing the plate around the buttons.

I just opened it up again, and I feel pretty dumb, but have to admit, I still didn't find any bulb, or even a wire going directly to the unit. I crawled right under the dash and from behind, not having any luck there either... Do I have to remove the dash instruments cluster? Is it lit from there on a '59 Plymouth??

I'll get back to it later tonight, but if anyone has an exploded view of the 1959 Plymouth (not Dodge!) pushbutton pod showing where this darn light is, I'll be happy!

On a 1959 Plymouth both the heater and transmission selector pushbuttons are illuminated from the side of the instrument cluster if memory serves me correctly , there are "windows" on the sides of the cluster that provide the light from the speedo and gauge illumination lamps....change those and you're back in business. The bulbs are #57's

Soiouz, your problem just reminds me about the map light in my 56 Chrysler New Yorker. I found the lens, the screws but not the socket of the bulb, nor the wiring.

I wish you good luck!

Happy Motoring!

You were right, problem solved! Thanks a lot!

It's actually much simpler this way than having to disassemble the pushbutton assembly!
