My '60 Plymouth fuel gauge would stay on empty until driving awhile, like 1/2 hour or more, than would start reading properly... took the sender out - problem was that float had pinhole, and had fuel in it. I still don't get why it ever worked at all, but anyway, seems to be a very common problem, just thought I'd post my finding!

You can relalce that float with a modern marine float, just the float of course not the gage.

That's what I hear, thanks Shep. The old brass ones become a bomb once they get a hole, not a good idea to try and resolder them, haha!
