I went to a local show yesterday and wound up staring at a 56 Plymouth 4-dr hardtop! I think it's the first one I ever saw which is wierd, since I grew up in the fifties. According to a book I've got, they only made about 15,000 of them so they must be almost as rare as a convertible. Great looking car, BTW. I wish I'd had my camera.

Did you get a chance to witness the rear sideglass rolling up and down ?

Very cool thing about those 56 4HT's.

'56 was the first year of Mopar 4dr hardtops. They existed from Plymouths through Imperials. There was a bit too much body flex in these cars - the frame engineering hadn't quite caught up with the body engineering. When windows stuck and the cars rusted, and owner's got tired of the apparent frame instability, this body style went to salvage earlier than other styles. Not many out there but like Doc says, great fun to watch the operation of the back door glasses.

I checked out that glass and talked to the owner about it. He said he took everything apart for the restoration (it was a barn find) and almost went nuts getting both back windows to work like they should!

if it's like the Studebaker rear windows of the era, the arm that pulls the windows up and down is a three-stage lever with a half-moon gear and the window doesn't just go up and down, it "rotates" also...

They fold up like scissor blades. Very unusual. Just another 50's "gadget" type neat-o thing !
