Location: Under the X in Texas | Robert McAtee owned the Daytona Speed Week Flying Mile winning 300F from 1961 until his passing. The car had a number of chromed pieces under the hood like valve covers, water neck, air cleaner tops, tach drive cable, and ALL the cross ram linkage pieces and misc. brackets. His claim was that there was a factory bulletin from 1961 or 62 (as I recall) that offered all this as a factory dress up package for the ram cars. Upon viewing his car at his home I asked him for a photo copy of that bulletin and I think I followed up with him twice on that. He never supplied it. I don't think anyone else in the 300 group has ever seen that bulletin either. But he did admit that he had all those originally painted parts chromed when he purchased the car as he was a showman. Now Bob had been a Chrysler dealer so it is possible he got something that very few other people ever saw. But I really don't believe him because chroming a tach drive cable, while do-able, compromises the function of it, for example. Summary: I seriously doubt Chrysler ever offered any of these underhood parts chrome plated for driven cars. At the same I would absolutely expect that there were one or more auto show display engines with chrome parts on them. | ||

Expert Posts: 1288 | d/b -- I believe most, if not all, Chrysler ram engines had black blocks and valve covers with red ram tubes and aircleaners. Dodge ram engines were red blocks, valve covers, and air cleaners with silver ram tubes. Generally, the Plymouth SonoRamic Commando's were red blocks but with gold valve covers, ram tubes, and air cleaners. I have no idea what the DeSoto engine looked like, but since Dodge produced all the "B" engines, I suspect the DeSoto mill had a lot of red in it. Also, since Dodge did the production, a few Plymouths came off the line with red rather than gold valve covers.
