Veteran Posts: 254 Location: Austria, Vienna | Let us assume that I did conversion of 56 new Yorker convertible into 300B convertible using genuine vert and genuine 300B. What you would appreciate to call it: 300B custom convertible used geniu conv body 56 NY convertible with 300B everything What has more value for you and what tags/title you would keep? Thank you for your input. Max

Location: Under the X in Texas | Your finished product would still be a '56 New Yorker convertible and under all international laws, it better retain the NYer serial number and title. The world knows that no factory authorized C300 or 300B convertibles were built so to try to VIN and title it as such would meet with total unacceptance from the enthusiast market. While this is a relatively easy clone to create, I would keep in mind that the C300 and 300B actually use the Windsor coupe as a starting point and the trim is from a Windsor. There has long been a rumor, and I'll just note it here because it persists down through decades, that the factory created six '56 Windsor convertibles with 300 front sheet metal and painted them in Spring colors to either test the market or serve a a marketing "hint" that the 300C convertible was coming for 1957 and they were driven around the country. These cars were still Windsor powered as I understand it and I'm not clear what was done for interiors. What happened to them? They may have been factory destroyed but more likely they just became used cars that everyone assumed were "body shop customs" where an enterprising shop took a front end wrecked Windsor rag top and slapped on a front end from a rear damaged junk yard 300. You would be far from the first to create a C300 or 300B convertible from a couple of cars. And you won't be the last.

Expert Posts: 2788 Location: USA - KY | . Could it be called a "Tribute Car"? (Or is there a difference between a "Clone" and a "Tribute Car"?)

Veteran Posts: 254 Location: Austria, Vienna | I don't think so, "tribute" means there is original 300 B convertible. Here is not the case. Or may be call it 300B custom convertible ( using the body from NY conv )?

Veteran Posts: 225 Location: Michigan | I've heard the word "phantom" used to describe custom cars like this, cars the factory never built (but should have). I love factory style customs like these but the oem tag should remain, just to avoid any confusion years from now. Better to do it this way than cut the roof off of a real 300!

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Agree with Greg C., above; Max, you'd have to "lead" with the term New Yorker....Custom Convertible in order not to violate any applicable fraud allegations. If only because, as Wayne states, above: the 300B's were built on Windsor chassis-ees, and there WERE 1956 Windsor convertibles produced in 1956. Now, about a certain presently-Hemi-engined 57 Dodge Custom Royal convertible.... Edited by d500neil 2012-01-09 7:21 PM

Veteran Posts: 254 Location: Austria, Vienna | This looks nice. 1956 NY/300B clone convertible sounds good. But is it any better than just NY? Please get me right I don't like NY front end.

Location: Parts Unknown | Sorry to derail the thread, ... but does anyone have photos of the 300c behind this "fantum 56" (or any others) painted this Champagne color ? Beautiful car, that 56 "phantom".

Veteran Posts: 225 Location: Michigan | A very unusual color. I know '57 300's only came in copper, white, black, green and coral but weren't there a few factory made in different shades? (mustard 300.jpg) Attachments ---------------- mustard 300.jpg (141KB - 91 downloads)

Location: Parts Unknown | This color was called "champagne" on the color chip charts. My 57 NY'er was this color with a charcoal sweep and roof. The 300's certainly were painted this color, as I have a factory dealer postcard showing a champagne convertible C in front of that wood fence that is often seen in photos taken out back of the studios. The paint has a super fine metallic in it, almost like a pearlescent. It was very pretty when buffed out. Dirty and rough, it was the classic "baby poop" yellow. Just say no to red !

The Chrysler 300 Club has a registry of found cars for each model year, including VIN and color. A small number were special ordered by executives in non-standard colors. Those have a code of 999 on the data plate. There are a couple of Champagne cars documented, as well as a few in Regimental Red, Shell Pink, etc., and even a couple of two tone 300Cs (roof/body).
