Member Posts: 42 Location: Torsby,Sweden | Hi i have a problem with my amp.gauge on my 56 Windsor it is going max to charge and the next moment max to discharge and suddenly it works allright and then suddenly it is for example stuck at max discharge or charge. Any one got a clue of what is wrong perhaps the regulator or.......? The charging is about 14 volt so it is no problem with the driving but is really anoying to see . Thanks! Anders Edited by windsor56 2012-03-10 5:30 PM

Or more precise the needle stays little bit below zero (discharging area). I have to give the engine about 1500 rpm to reach a good charging value. Then the needle stays steady between max and zero and goes to zero after few minutes. I would check the ground wiring as well. Few weeks ago I noticed a wire from the pass side head to the firewall - just behind the cylinder head. I guess this connection is very important for the voltage regulator as well. As Sven said, I would check the brushes as well (in your case). What's about the wiring harness behind the gauges. Do the wires look good? And what's about around the ignition switch? By the way: did you check if there is a short circuit to ground (temporarily)? Good luck! Happy Motoring! Dieter BTW: I had to jump start the engine of my moms A3 - engine finally running without jump start cables everything did start flickering and finally the engine (electronic ignition, electronic fuel injection) died. Unfortunately I cannot recall the reason (rectifier defect - at the Alternator or cell short circuit in the battery). Later on an elder Volvo drove by. Engine running really bad - cell defect in the battery), the owner told me later. If you don't find the reason in the generator, wiring and so on, I would try another battery.

Thanks for the help /Anders
