Regular Posts: 78 Location: Mistake on the Lake | The black plastic spacers that go behind the window cranks on my '61 are all cracked and broken. Does anyone know of a source for these?

Before cutting their diameter to the proper size, I glued 4 quarters together and tapped them to create the correct shoulder section shape of the OEM guys. Once their center shoulders were correctly shaped, I drilled out the middle area to create the OEM crank-arm hole, and then trimmed their edges to the proper diameter. These spacers are hidden from view when the crank arms are installed, they fully protect the trim panels from the action of the cranks being rotated, and they are essentially break-proof. A good way to recycle beer cans, too, but try to find/use thick bottomed aluminum cans. Edited by d500neil 2014-04-14 9:11 PM

I know that I have a METAL OEM-type crank-spacer/washer, but can't find it, so gotta believe that its installed on H., right now (and where-else SHOULD it be?). Here's some shots of my spare-unused spacers. First two show how two (not '4', as earlier mentioned) quarters can be used as a buck to form the central area of your donor-beer-can spacer material. This guy was a prototype; its central hole is too large. The next pic shows a finished product, but the aluminum was hammered too thin, and a cracking developed on its working flange area. Oh well, time to sacrifice another brew... The next pic shows an aluminum spacer that wore out; you can see how the crank base 'worked' against its perimeter-flange. Final pic shows this same spacer, along with a similarly worn-out OEM spacer, and a spare OEM plastic one. These spacers serve a good purpose, and are very necessary, to protect the trim panels from the crank arms, but once they are installed, they work completely invisibly. Can you post a pic showing how that guy looks, with the window crank, as it would appear, installed on a door panel? Edited by d500neil 2014-04-28 8:57 PM
