Getting car ready to paint and can't figure out how to get it off. No screws/bolts I can find only the two jets for the washer fluid- broke one of those already trying to figure out how to get them off... Is that the only thing holding this trim on like I think? If so, how the heck do you get it off (and where can I get a replacement??).

This is a 59 NYer.

Thanks!

~Kevin

Not sure if the same or not, but on my '58 Plymouth, it was held on with tiny little clips. Has to rpy the hell outta it to get it to pop up. However, be careful as the little clips tend to break easily. I found some little clips from a GM car that fit perfectly though as all mine did break.

Here is a quick pic I took last night of the piece I can't figure out how to remove. The little button in the center is for the washer fluid and as far as I can tell these two buttons are the only thing holding on the trim.
The one on the other side I already broke- the little set screw with the hole in it for the fluid to come out I tried to remove it thinking it also held the button in place. Well it broke right off (being hollow). Oops.

I really want to remove it to clean out in there and to paint...

Look at the cowl vent. Notice that there are flat areas where there are no holes. Behind each of these flat areas are two wire spring clips, kind of like the ones used to hold really thin moldings. What you want to do is wedge a tiny screwdriver between the vent and the body and pry so that the grill pops straight up. In fact, it may be better to use two screwdrivers, one on each side of the flat area to exert even pressure. If you destroy one of the spring clips, don't worry. They are available from Gary Goers or Restoration Specialties.

Post a picture once you get the vent off to show what the underside looks like.

A very transparent description from Ron, how to remove it. In addition here a picture taken from my spare parts. One is restored, the other as I got it.

Put the cowl reverse on the floor and aligne it with a flat piece of wood, then polish the upper side  and it will become as NOS, for it is stainless steel.  - SERGE -

Once again thanks for the help and I will report back my findings. How do I remove the two washer bullets? The look to be too big for the grill to go over them (or are they part of the grill???).

There is a small nut that holds the washer nozzle in place. You will see it once the vent is removed.

They should be fixed with a nut. When remounting check for correct direction and angle of the water outlet.

Aha- I see the light now. I will get this piece off tonight. Have to wait for a helper on Saturday to do the bumper removal, then I should be ready for final paint prep. :-)

The cowl vent should take 2 minutes to pop off. I use a thin putty knife with blue tape on it to keep it from chipping the paint. Most stainless on our cars pops right off with the right technique.

I wouldn't know- so far the only trim I have had to remove is the rear view mirror. All my stainless came in the trunk and a 5 gallon bucket in the back seat...
