the credit union in davenport has a 73 or 74 chrysler newport custom for sale. they're asking $750. the carb is trashed, but the car looks pretty good. body almost completely straight, paint holding up well, interior not perfect but very good. it has a 400, which i know little about. good tires, starts but doesn't run well. no engine noises, appears to need a good tuneup. has a/c , p/s, auto, am radio, pb, 98,000 mi. the car was repoed in a bankruptcy.

i'm thinking about $500 or less. other than being a tank, does it have any potential? my daughter turns 16 in a month, and i'm not about to buy her a mustang, convertible, or other crackerbox deathtrap. sorry it's not forward look, but if it was, i wouldn't let her drive it anyway. how about that 400?

I'd like to have the 400,,,,,,,
Absoulty NOTHING wrong with a 'leadcrank' 400!
All a 400 is, is a overbored 383.
To me, five Ben Franklins sounds pretty good. Go for it.
Yer kid isn't,,,,,or YOU, are not going to like filling the tank every day or so,,,,,,, 12- 16 mpg?

Grab the car. There are'nt many of our old cars left. My first car was a '78 Newport with the 400..........the sucker was bulletproof. I know.........it's been thru many of races and burnout contests! Car was a great one! Old cars never go out of style!!! If the engine does need any work at all, all parts are available and it does'nt cost much to fix these cars.

i got it for $400!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we got it on the rack, gave it a good look over, and then i beat the guy to death. probably could've have gotten it for $250 if i'd tried, but i'm hoping for future business from the credit union.

the ignition module went out, so i had to get a new one. i was able to bitch that just looking at the thing was an $80 ordeal. i paid $13 for the module. hee hee hee!!! and no, that's not cheating. $38 list, $42 labor for diagnosis and installation. oh, and by the way, if we don't make a deal, i'm taking it off when i bring it back. (no, i didn't actually have to say that. but i would have done it).

this thing is killer!!! if i ever get a camera and learn how to post, i'll put 'em up here.

viva la 400!!!!!!!!

changed the plugs last night, and did a cylinder leakage test. two cylinders do have rings that aren't completely shot, but not good. fortunately, it runs really smooth with a good idle. carb is going to need some work, float level is too high and accelerator pump may have issues. it'll dog when you step on it at 25 mph, but doesn't do it at 55 mph. gotta figure this one out. rear main seal is likely leaking. needs a pitman arm, but drives okay.

forgot to mention, tires are excellent!

Good job, David! One less C body for the demo derby boys to trash! Now drive it here and we'll load the 230 I gave you.

K.

thanks, kenny! your kind words are appreciated. i know that a 74 newport isn't exactly forward look, so i appreciate all on this board who haven't mentioned that. however, in addition to being one of the "last of the dinosaurs", it actually was a descendant of our beloved forward look buggies.

in an interesting twist, i've discovered that the 74 newport rides smoother than my 98 caddy deville. i can now plow through the various familiar bumps around town with barely a blip!

now if i can just figure out how to get the time to get to vegas to get that 230 i'm hoping my truck driving buddy might come through for me!

I almost bought the same exact car while I was in college - a '74 Newport sedan with a 400. asking was $400 on it - probably went to the demo derby guys, but it was a nice original. I looked at a few of the New Yorkers of that era too. I wanted one specifically because they're built like tanks... ended up with a '72 Pontiac instead, which is a close second construction-wise. Hey, I really wanted the 455....

One of the neighbors where I used to live ran a private taxi company for a while and they used these for the cabs, they had maybe half a dozen or more scattered around up there including one upside down out back with the drivetrain all out of it. So they must last a long time, a taxi piles up the milage in a hurry -

thought i'd give a little update. took the car on a (short) economy run to see what the fuel mileage would be. filling up the 26(?) gallon tank will make you gulp at today's prices. 52 miles took just under 2.4 gallons. nearly 21.7 mpg!!!!!

so far, the ecm was $13; plugs, $16; carb kit, $26; float, $8; wiper blade refills, $8; vacuum hoses, $8.

i need a pitman arm, about $69.

hmm, NOT BAD!!!
