| Where can I find a oil pump primer shaft for my 315 engine? or do you have any tricks to priming the engine prior to start?
Thanks |

Location: N.W. Fla. | You can buy that or just groove a rod so it fits. Now then...get a buddy to help. You need one guy on the drill motor & one turning the engine over with a breaking bar or ratchet. It'll take a while to get oil through out the engine. There's one point as you turn over the engine that oil will get to one bank of rockers, you'll hear the drill relax a bit when the hole lines up. Stop turning the engine over @ that point & look for oil in one rocker assembly or the other, see that there is oil flow. After you determine that it's good start turning the engine slowly again. @ some point the other bank will start getting oil. At that point you turn the crank to Top Dead Center..indexing the oil pump shaft to that when you get the Int shaft in( 3 or 4 trys is typical) & the dizzy in, that the rotor will be pointing @ #1 post

Location: Michigan | And don't be surprised if this takes you awhile. My drill did not indicate a 'relax' point so I had to remove the valve covers to see when the oil was flowing to the heads. It is a very small window when turning over that crank... worked at it for 2 hours with my daughter on the drill to ensure I was getting oil to all the points it needed to reach. |

Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | what i do is a very simple method . i made my own slotted shaft yrs. ago . plumbed a real oil gauge in to sending unit hole . using a drill on the slotted shaft , lowered to meet the oil pump i turned the drill until maximum
pressure was reached , then let it turn for about another 20 seconds or so . replacing the pump drive and dizzy . the whole priming process takes about 30 seconds . after all parts are replaced , start the motor and begin breakin
. i've used this method since 1968 on my 61 fury conv. and every rebuild since . it's never failed me once . ---------------------------------------------------------------later |
