I bought this car in May. It was on E-bay a couple of times earlier in the year. It is from Southern California and is rust free and straight. It's missing the the engine, but I have a correct 315 D500 engine complete with manifolds, carb, etc. It has 12 inch brakes and 6 leaf springs on the rear. For some reason, it has 11 inch brakes on the front. I have a set of 12 inch brakes and spindles from a parts car. I assume it has the stiffer (and shorter) springs on the front. Anyone know how I can tell? I want to add power steering and brakes from a parts car that I have. I also want the twin rear antennae. I probably have all the parts needed to restore it. I may want some help down the road on the restoration.

Doug, over on our "Fender Tag Decoding' message board, on the top two 'sticky' messages are instructions on how
you can buy a copy of your car's IBM build-card.

You can also post-up an image of your car's Paint/Trim data plate on that message board.

Among other neat info---your car's HD suspension equipment will be confirmed on it---your car's original engine (stamping-)
number will be confirmed, along with its actual build date.

Your car may be one of the 'real' 1956 D500 cars, before the factory began merely putting the engine into all of the car models,
having the heavy duty suspension pieces on it.

Do you know why the car is standing so high on its rear suspension/

The HD D500's actually sat very flat/low on their stiff-springing.

Welcome aboard!

I have the Dodge Owner Service Certificate for this car. The engine number was D500-7518 with a delivery date of December 29, 1956 from Weatherly Motor Company Ventura, California.

I have some concerns too about how high it sits in the rear. I am not a complete expert on these cars, but was told by someone fairly knowledgeable that the D500 suspension had 6 leafs in the rear. Station wagons supposedly also had 6 leafs but with a different arch. Someone may have put a station wagon rear end in it. I parted out a '56 Royal 4 door D500, and it sat really low, but the rear springs are 5 leaf. It had 12 inch brakes all around. I saved the rear axle, the front and rear springs, and the front brakes, spindles, and tie rod arms. Maybe it had the true D500 suspension. I could really use some help on this if anyone knows about it.

I attached a picture of the data tag and will also post it on the other forum you mentioned. I've already contacted Chrysler Historical Society to get copies of the punch card for the build.

Thanks,
Doug

The 56 Dodge D500 should have 12" brakes all around. These parts came from the 56 Desoto Fireflyte and there was a custom forged steering arm to get the toe-in right with the standard linkage. Probably someone thought 11" fronts would be easier to maintain. The 56 Fury special option had these same 12" brakes all around with the 4-pinion rear end from the 56 Desoto. Back in the late sixties it was popular to give cars a "rake" by making the back end sit high. As I recall, the D500 and Fury were supposed to sit 1" lower than standard all around.

You've added another variable - the 4 pinion differential. Is there any way to tell if the diff is a 4 pinion by looking at the outside? The axle that's in the car has 12" brakes and 6 leaf springs - I just don't know if they were there from the factory. I have a set of 12 inch brakes, spindles, and the steering arms for the front that came off of a parts car. I also have the rear axle and all the springs from it. My burning question is whether the D500 rear springs were 5 or 6 leaves. Does anybody out there have an original D500 that is willing to count the number of leaves on the rear springs?
By the way, I'd love to see pictures of your cars.

These photos are from when we first found our wagon. It is a special order paint and D-500 car.

I have much newer photos and the car has largely been put back together, but I am in afghanistan
and have no way to access anything more current or check my leaf spring count - which might be
different still, being a wagon.

I love the 56 Dodge, especially the kick-up trimmed Custom Royals. They are a perky looking little
car.

BTW - I have seen postcard / photos of Weatherly Motors in Ventura. Can't remember where, though.
My Ex's family came from Ventura, so they caught my attention when I saw them.

The 4-pinion rear end has a cross-bar type u-joint yoke as opposed to a ball and trunnion flat flange. the 56 Dodge and Plymouth had splayed rear leaf springs, meaning the fronts were closer together that the rears. The consequence of this is the saddles welded on the rear axle to seat on the springs had to accommodate the angles and the closer spacing. Look at these saddles, if they look clean and correct, that's probably the original rear end. The gear ratio should also be stamped on a small ground-flat boss on the right side, bottom near the front nose. The D500 and HiPo Fury (Dual Quad) wanted to control rear spring wrap on acceleration, so before there were traction bars the factory just added more leaves. Using the station wagon leaf springs sounds right to me.

ps, did you find this in Arizona?
i saw a '56 D500 in Arizona a few years back in roughly the same condition - the guy was asking $38k so i had to turn it down...

edit: okay, i see now where it says Southern Cali... how long was she in S. Cali? i have to wonder if it's the same one from Arizona a few years back...

I was doing some file research for gt46tc, above, today, and confirmed (it was all there, in the factory literature, but
I can't, otherwise, quote chapter & verse about the 56'ers)...that the ONLY OEM dual 4-bbl intake manifold that was
(theoretically) available for the 56 Dodges was #1733878, which was assigned to the full-race Kiekaefer aluminum
guy, which was created specifically for the February 1956 Daytona Speedweeks performance trials and races.

That intake was available as part of the "Double Four-Barrel Carburetor Group", which initially included two special,
identical, carbs, which only had one P/N, and did not have a Carter brass-tag 'model' number, only P/N 1636649.

The D.F.-B.C. Group, itself, does not have an individual, specific, 'Part' number assigned to it, only that description of it.

But, apparently, the Group's intake, carbs, exhaust manifolds, exhaust pipe, muffler/pipe, and air cleaner were indiv-
idually available (with each part having its own P/N), because:

The subject Confidential Price Bulletin, of 1/12/56, states: " To order above equipment....[the C.P.B. also referenced the
availability of the "Chassis Parts Group"]....specify Part or Group name on car order."

Later, the two 'mysterious' identical-carbs, #1636649, were superseded by FT carb 2476S and RR carb 2445S.

There are no known Technical Service Bulletins, or Price Bulletins, etc., that indicate that the Kiekaefer dual-
carb intake manifold's availability was superseded by another, 'civilized', intake manifold (the 1957 Offy).
