Regular Posts: 68 | Guys, Are there new front coil springs available for '56 Furies? I'm starting my frame work soon and was thinking about the springs. Thanks! Tommy Salem, VA 56 Fury under resto, 392 hemi power

If you're putting a cast iron 392 in a 56 Plymouth Fury with a stock front end, you should use the coil springs from a 56 Chrysler to hold the weight, which exceeds the stock Plymouth V8 by 200-300 pounds. The spring dimensions are the same and will fit. BTW, here's a complete 56 Chrysler front end with 12" brakes that bolted right up to my 56 Plymouth. Only trouble was with the tierods, had to shorten them 3/4". Edited by rbmain 2013-06-28 1:26 AM (Steering Knuckle.JPG) Attachments ---------------- Steering Knuckle.JPG (52KB - 102 downloads)

Expert Posts: 1506 Location: Colo Spgs | Tommy If you use the A-318 Family of Engines you can have an honest 230 HP with a 2 bbl or 240 HP with a 4 bbl and you are less the added weight on the front. Oh Yeh The Power to Weight Ratio is OK too. The De Soto V8's have a better power to weight ratio also than any 392. In answer to your question do contact ... www.springsnthings.com . The 2x4 345 DeSoto gave 345 hp and weighed 670 lbs. The 2x4 392 gave 380hp and weighed 740 lbs. If the 392 put out 1 hp more, they would have equal power/weight ratios, which is closer to reality. But today, it is so much easier to increase the power of a Chrysler hemi than the DeSoto, that you can easily outrun any DeSoto. Also, it is much easier to reduce the weight of a Chyrsler hemi compared to the DeSoto. The DeSoto just doesn't have the aftermarket support that the Chrysler's do. So in the end, you would be much better off with the Chrysler. I have a 392 hemi ready for my '56 Savoy too. Great combination. Right now it has a 331 hemi.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9680 Location: So. Cal | I forgot to say that the weight of the stock 331 hemi lowered the front of my car by about 1" with the stock V8 springs. I actually like it better that way. I installed a larger '56 Chrysler sway bar and it handles slightly better than it did before the engine swap. Edited by Powerflite 2013-06-27 9:52 PM

Regular Posts: 68 | Thanks for the help, guys, I'll order a set of '56 Chrysler springs. My car came sans engine & transmission, so I'll go with the 392 because I have a fresh, zero-time engine to go in this project. I have put it on a diet with an aluminum intake and I've re-worked the front drives to eliminate the heavy brackets. This engine'll scoot, too, with a Holley Terminator efi and a Chevy HEI8 computer-controlled distributor. Tommy

I've often thought it would be nice to put in a modern aluminum V6 4-valve OHC that puts out about 300 hp. They're relatively cheap and plentiful at pickers. The engine bay would accommodate it easily, and the weight would be cut in half moving the CG back a few feet.
