I've been trying to save the Masonite headliner in my 57 DeSoto Firesweep, but it's dissolving. I covered it in perforated vinyl, created backside supports, etc. Instead of fitting a cloth one with bows, I wondered what the restorer of the below-pictured 59 Firesweep did. Anyone have a clue as to what the shiny white material might be? I've seen some 57-8 Plymouths with something similar.

I saw that too, JT - I wonder if it is some sort of thick mylar sheet? It almost looks like it has kitchen applications.

hilarious.....I too am considering a replacement of some sorts. Mine has something resembling how it would have came from the factory.

But not only is the cloth (vinyl?) sagging but I can tell that whatever the cloth is supposed to adhere to is sagging also.

Not sure if this is something I'll tackle myself or have someone else do.

I don't have much luck doing things myself and I can't figure out a way to get the car upside down if I glued in the new headliner.

Hey Allen, your 58 Plymouth would have had a longitudinal Masonite headliner in 3 pieces, with the support bows running front to back. These are cool looking when fresh, but like with Dodges and Firesweeps, they sag over time. New ones are big bucks. Some people replace them with traditional headliners made of fabric, and suspended by bows. This job isn't major, but not for a lot of people, because it can be tough to make it look taught and smooth.

Got it _- I'll have someone else do it....I don't like having any spare cash anyway.

BTW in pics that I will post after this weekend's activitities you'll see your old PS pump - thanks again.

I installed or replaced my masonite style panels with vinyl bow setup. I documented the process in my photo album. Not too difficult. Just be sure to use the right adhesive Dap's Landau top/headliner glue. anything short of that adhesive and you will have problems with the glue giving when the sun comes out and heats up the roof.
