Member Posts: 22 | I have been looking for a 1960 or 61 Imperial Convertible for a while. I have just been offered a 1961 CV which has had an older cosmetic restoration ( paint and interior ) . It appears to have solid floors including the trunk floor but there is some evidence of prior rust repair to the rocker area ahead of the rear wheels and the lower rear quarters (behind the rear wheels). The car is complete, but has not been run for about 10 years. I am seriously considering this car, but would have preferred to find an original never restored example if possible. Does anyone have a 60 or 61 Imperial they wish to sell? If so please send me a PM. I would also like to get an idea of values for the 60 or 61 Imperial Convertible including cars that require restoration and would appreciate if anyone has any sales data of cars recently sold that they wish to share. Thanks, Phillip

Location: North Australia | Fairdinkum Phillip, sounds like you might have found the car! Original 60 and 61 Imperial Convertibles are not common finds, as you no doubt now know (Just over 1000 units built for both years?). Mikes car noted by Doc above has since been sold. This car had had a cosmetic resto in its past and was one of very few complete restoration project 1960 conv's I have seen. Mike might chime in on his selling price, and you can search up the thread on here to see the pics. I don't think I have seen a (good condition) complete project 61 Conv Imp for years. Most you see are sad looking cars needing everything. I have not seen a 60 or 61 conv for sale here in Australia (either original or otherwise), which is where you are I assume? Some earlier years are available here in AUssie now. Imperials (actually all the FL cars) seem like expensive cars to restore in Australia considering shipping prices, So getting the best car possible to start off a restoration is very important. What are your plans for the car when you get one? This site and the OIC are your best resources for finding a car, and Google is your friend. I will keep an eye out as well. Steve.

Expert Posts: 1886 | I sold the car awhile back. Super nice collector out west. I sold car for 38. The buyer called me after receiving it and said he was very pleased and the car was better than he expected. We wouldn't have put it back original and that's what that car needed. Only reason I sold it.

Member Posts: 22 | Hi Mike Did your car have prior body work or rust repairs or any areas with bondo etc.? The car i have been offerred has had a cosmetic resto and there is evidence of previous repairs, in the rockers and lower quarters although the floors appear clean and solid. The asking price is low 40s. The car seems to be well optioned with autronic eye, swivel seats, air cond & cruise. Was there much interest in your 60 at your asking price. I am trying to gauge the market for these cars to determine what i should offer. Thanks, Phil

Expert Posts: 1886 | I sold my car within 24 hours of putting it on ebay. My car was originally white, was repainted red. I only had the car for a few months and did nothing to it. It was a non running car. The advantage to my car was it was 100% all there. It was incredibly solid. Also a triple white car.

Location: Parts Unknown | When I was 30, I had much less of a sense that I wasn't going to live forever than I do now. I DID sense that finding a near-impossible to find car was a major hurdle to get past, and passed up no opportunity to get the car I was after, even if it meant endless frustration and fruitless goose chases. When you frantically do everything you can to save your buddy as he bleeds out against a mud wall before the choppers can get him to help really drives home the point that we could be gone at any moment and that waiting to live our dreams may easily leaves us before we get the chance. Car wreck, work accident, we all know people that get dead too early for lame reasons. What says I'm not next ? I envy guys who go for the kinds of cars they car "shop around" for. But for those of us who are only content with the unobtainium, good luck with that ! You will be too old or just plain dead to really get any long term pleasure out of your dream if you fiddle around and don't pull the trigger when the opportunity looks you in the eye. 20 people were standing behind me when I bought my car, all waving money and ready to buy. I did not blink. I bought it sight unseen because I knew I would likely never see another for sale. It has been 20 years and I was right, I haven't seen another for sale. ... at ANY price. Money is just a tool. Dreams and death are all that really means anything in the end. Live your dream before cancer or some loon kills your waffling ass !

Expert Posts: 2312 Location: Arizona | Just heard a couple days ago of a relative of a friend who's wife was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Odds are not good. Co-workers brother in law got stomach cancer, time from feeling bad to being dead was less then six months. Knew several smokers who died within the six month window of "got a bad cough better see the doctor" to death. Friend of my dad's was run over changing a tire on the side of the freeway. Cousin my age (but 15 years ago) got breast cancer and died within a year. There were a few classic cars I'd always wanted to own but the price always seemed too high to justify. Then I got prostate cancer in 2005 and the reality of an early death grabbed me by the throat. The cancer is gone, knock on wood, but I no longer felt the price for the classic car was too high, a least not so high if I'm reasonable in what I go after. Now that I'm on the third classic I have zeroed in on just what kind of condition I want my classic car to be in... Don't want the paint so faded and the rust bubbles so obvious that I don't feel pride of ownership, but also found that making the car PERFECT is it's own sort of hell. Once it's perfect the only way is down if you drive it at all.

Member Posts: 22 | The purpose of my post was to gauge the market value as i have not seen any for sale in a long while and secondly to find out if any others may be available at this time. I have made up mind to buy the car and i have submitted an offer and waiting for a response. The car is not advertised anywhere. I may just bit the bullet if was advertised and paid the asking price

Expert Posts: 3155 Location: NY & VT | The problem is you're not likely to find comps... buy & be happy with your decision to finally own the car of your dreams...read what Doc said above and be wiser for it, we've both been there. Edited by firedome 2013-11-19 8:19 PM

Location: Parts Unknown | Makes me think of a scenario circa 1968 where Sophia Loren walks up to you, says she wants a hot night out and is going to tear you apart when she takes you home, and you hesitate because some "hotter" woman MIGHT ask you out that same night !

Regular Posts: 82 Location: Eastern Manitoba | This one has been for sale for a while. There were pictures posted of the convertible and a price in a previous ad, but not now. It is not as nice as the one you mention, but it was a lot cheaper. I think the price was about $12000 for both cars, but I really can't remember. http://saskatchewan.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-classic-cars-1961-Chr...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9701 Location: So. Cal | jimntempe - 2013-11-18 10:36 AM ....but also found that making the car PERFECT is it's own sort of hell. Once it's perfect the only way is down if you drive it at all. Very well put. And most people only realize this fact long after they have squirreled away way too much time and money to actually drive it and risk the usual wear/tear/dings/stains/chips/breakdowns/fender benders of real life. So after they get tired of staring at it in their garage, they eventually sell it off to someone else at a big loss of time and money.
