Location: Houston | Can a 58+ style iron steeirng box be swapped into a '57 car that had the older 'aluminum' style box? In other words, do the frame holes match up? Is there a Pitman arm issue?

Location: Jamaica Plain, MA | Hey, yep. I did this to my 57 DeSoto Firedome. It has a 60 Constant Control box. where the coaxial (or in my case, manual) box used to be. No Pitman arm issues, they are the same. It all bolts up. Don't forget the little wedge thing on the lower bolt towards the firewall. The power steering pump for the coaxial box (Vickers style) puts out the same output as a pump for a Constant Control box, so you can reuse that. The trickiest part is the steering column. The Constant Control column is longer because the coax box runs into the car. You're best off using a '58 or '59 column. All and all, pretty easy. |
