Is there anyone still supplying NOS springs......Apparently the fronts have one arm and hook a bit longer so that the coils of the spring clear the shoe when inserted into the hole on the web of the shoe.

Anyone?

I'm seeking front brake drum return springs as well. The return springs mounted are green and the parts number is 1409970. These return springs were used from 56 to 58 in 12" brake drums. The brake shoe return springs for the rears axle have the parts number 1672001. As well used from 56 to 58 in 12" brake drums.

Any source? Pls not chinese.

Happy Motoring!

Why I'm looking for the front drum brake shoe return springs (original parts # 1409 970) is that I hooked the coil spring first and prior to mount brake shoe into the centerplane. This way I had to pull the brake shoe quite a long distance and overloaded the return spring. The rear return spring in the right front wheel has no pretension anymore. The windings are apart from each other. After the first brake shoe I stopped this procedure and used a pin awl like Wizard proposed. All other (three) brake pads at the front axle and all brake shoes of the rear axle I mounted with the pin awl. At the point I pulled the first brake shoe that far I realized that I destroyed a return spring. Actually the rear brake shoe at the front right hand drum drags and grabs faster than the lh front brake. No wonder there was a lot of dust in this drum brake only (!) while we removed both front brake drums (Wizard and me). Please don't tell me to use the improper procedure for all other brake shoes at the front axle. Thank you.

Happy Motoring!

Dieter

Last yearI bought a set of nos front brake springs from Northwestern Auto Supply in Grand Rapids Mi. Call 1-800-704-1078,ask for Lenny. You will need to count the # of coils on the springs. My 59 Firesweep has 3 coils on the front shoes(O)

Thank you very much. I appreciate your help so much. Thank you.

My '56 New Yorker has 4 coils on the front and shoud have 5 coils at the rear. I got this information out of a 1958 Service Manual. But after looking at the potos I did mine has 4 coils at rear as well (even though the parts number are different for the front and the rear spring).

Yeh, I know. I had a quick look into the 1959 service manual, section brake. There was a small modification between the 1958 and 1959 brake. The attachement point for 1959 models changed as well as the shoe retainer.

I just orderd a set for all four corners.
