Lads --
Weather permitting, I hope to bring the Big-Tailed Beast to the car show at the outlet mall at Castle Rock next Saturday (July 19). If you have some spare time, stop by. The BTB is very easy to recognize and I usually am the old fudd standing or sitting close by.
I'm kinda looking forward to taking The Beast up there as I used to run my first '60 Fury at the now defunct Continental Divide Raceway, the remains of which us old guys can see on the west side of I-25 south of town. Can you believe that in those days the Colorado State Patrol (they may still have been the Colorado Courtesy Patrol in those days) would position a car on the median on I-25 and allow the guys on the northbound lane to cross the median, the southbound land, over the railroad tracks, and over a dirt track through a barbed wire fence to CDR?
At any rate, if you want to waste some time, stop on by.
Godec
PS, Ignore my son who will probably close to me in a '69 Yellow 427 Camero. Where did I go wrong?!

Hi, Joe:

I will not be able to attend the Castle Rock show this weekend, but it sounds like a lot of fun. I never saw the Continental Divide Raceway, but in researching the history of Wilbur Huyett's "the Beast", I ran across several race brochures from Continental Divide and even did some research at the library. It sounds like it was quite a popular attraction in the mid to late 1960's when Huyett was racing.

Was it a dirt track?

No, the facility completely paved. Just the approach to it from I-25 was dirt.

I wasn't good enough to do any racing involving turns; I could only just point the car in a straight line. But I do remember seeing a Bocar Stiletto up there and that was a beautiful car for those ancient times.
I wonder if there are any remnants of the old strip and track? From I-25, you can see the slope where the grandstand used to be.
There used to be a website called "Colorado Racing Memories" which had some interesting photos of cars and guys that I remember, but it shut down several years ago. Too bad.

Kind of blah. There was a nice display of vintage military stuff: a 10-ton wrecker, a deuce-and-a-half, a pre-M151 jeep, an amphibious jeep towing an almost operational 37 MM antitank gun, and a ambulance. Other than the above, there wasn't much else of interest -- various models of Stangs and Vettes.
Lots of spectators, though.
