Subject: Rebuilding a 1959 Dodge Generator

My 59 Dodge has generator 1842801/GJM8001A. The pulley is pressed on. What is the correct way of removing it ? Is there a special puller that will accomplish this ?

Location: Ontario, Canada		Yes there is but I could never find one. Take a long V-belt, wrap the pulley with it and clamp the scrap belt on both sides of the pulley with two vise grips. Secure both ends of the belt by strongly pulling them apart. You now have the gen hanging by its pulley. Make a soft landing for the gen when it falls and hammer down on the shaft with a suitable sized "drift". Works just fine!!

So this evening, I borrowed a 3 1/2 x 3 1/4 3-legged puller. Soaked the center shaft with PB Blaster. Pulled the pulley/fan piece off with no real problems. The only thing you have to be careful of: Use the inner circle for attaching the legs. Don't use the pulley area for the legs or you'll deform the channel.
