Okay, here's my dilemma : The fsm states the torgue for both the kick down and low reverse bands at 47 -50 inch-pounds. This takes into account using a C-3583 extension tool, which, I do not possess. Does anyone know how much they de-rated this spec or put another way, what is the value supposed to be without using an extension ?

The torque isn't all that critical; I would use 72 in. lbs. which is the torque spec for the later 727/904 with no extension.

I always use the older trans specs using an inch pound torque wrench with no extension, and I haven't had any issues. Just follow the instructions, which is to turn back the screw a couple turns after hitting the spec.

The 727 method has worked fine for me for years on the iron, aluminum TF's and the PF transmissions.

Thanks for this post

After reading todays forum (as I do daily), I was going to look in my manual for the specs and adjust my trans

I havnt done it since I re built it, but the car has only been yard driven (and a couple of trips around the block) and seems to be working ok anyway

I think I have the tool your looking for, i'll look out in the shed, is it a Powerflite? have the inch lb torque wrench also, if it's what ya need, you can borrow it, just pay shipping back and forth.

That's a cool tool.
I know of factory tools, but never imagined they would make a special tool for something silly simple a setting a band on the transmission.

Like said above, the actual torque value is not that critical. Just firmly 'snug' is about right.
The factory just wants you to have the band 'nice and tight' around the drum before you set the amount of turns loose on the adjuster.

i have the same tool. its also for torqueflites. but as chitzler/bigblock said its actually not needed. it just graces my shop wall. use an open end wrench and turn the adjusting stud clockwise until you feel the stop. it wont turn any further unless you use an extension and brutal force. then back off as described in the shop manual.

That's a shame because you could've also used it to adjust your chompers with.
I've learned these tools are the hot ticket and highly sought after in Alabama and some of the surrounding states...

Naw, not really, hell there's only a few of us Southern Rednecks got any teeth's left anyway. Now up North, that's the place to market these, hell, everyone's got 32 perfect pearly whites, and dentist's are like Maytag repair men!

Thank you very much for the offer, but I've adjusted it as suggested and already put her back down on the ground.
