Location: London, England | Hi all,
I got a great used steering wheel for my '57 Belvedere some time back and put it away ready for when I got the dash done. Having bought the right puller, I had my old wheel off, but then realised that the back is quite different.
The original wheel has the horn connector and wire, the "new" one doesn't - but look, the turn signal cancel pawl/tab looks different too!
What's going on?

Location: Perth Australia | I'll take a guess here Ian, but 1 power steer, the other manual.
On the later wheels, they have the horn contact disc on wheels for p/s, the manual ones have a wire that goes up the centre of the steering shaft.
You can get it apart by carefully prying the self cancelling ring off, the horn contact has a rubber ring that centres and insulates it from the wheel under the self cancelling ring
That ring is made from a really brittle steel (I have broken 2 of them), so be carefull, although, on that wheel, you should be able to heat the ring up to get it to let go, but on the p/s wheel, you will need to get a new horn ring (they are available if they are the same as 60 wheels)

Location: London, England | Ah, yes, that makes sense. They're both deluxe wheels, but my original is indeed for my power steered car. So, I need to take off the horn contact ring from the old wheel, or get a replacement since it may get damaged, and then remove the self-cancelling rings and swap them?
I looked for a '60 horn contact ring, but only found them NOS for $50 on eBay. Do you know anywhere else these are available from?

I dont think you will find a good used one as I think most of them, the rubber will be really hard or perished

Location: atlanta | I have an NOS wheel for my 61 Ply, I have to do the same thing, I have the new ring, but am worried abut damaging the new ring when I install it, I would imagine the old ring won't come off without tearing it up, but, how easy is it to install the new ring, I've never done this before. |
