Expert Posts: 2120 Location: atlanta | I was thinking of doing my car, but after seeing some color on it, i don't think i'm gonna do it. It's really the taste of the owner, remember the old saw, "Ya can't please everyone". If the owner likes it, that's all that counts, what's the point of building a car that everyone else likes but You don't, build your car the way you want it, not whether it will be accepted bu the crowd.

Location: Indiana | is "scallops" the official terminology? i've always referred to door "indents" as 'scallops' (such as the 2011 thru present 7th generation Dodge Charger)...

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8445 Location: Perth Australia | I did contemplate a flame paint job for my dodge, but it just sort of got forgotten in the swirl of all the other stuff that was going on I did save a few pictures of various paint jobs though, mostly chevs

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7423 Location: northern germany | i can't stand any PAINTED ornamentation. i dislike the watson cars. that being said if its done with restraint, like bigblocks 57 above, i could live with it. the watsons plymouths (57/56) are so ugly (imo) and garish it hurts looking at them. watson must be of oriental descent... yes i know he wasn't Edited by 1960fury 2014-08-18 8:54 PM

Expert Posts: 2519 Location: central Illinois | I remember the first time I saw scallops was on a 60 New Yorker and I thought "WTF?" I walked around the car several times letting it all sink in and in the end I felt it needed to be sanded down and done in a single color. I won't have it on my car but whomever likes theirs that way... have at it.

Location: Indiana | not scallop related, but one of the coolest paint jobs i've ever seen was done with SARAN WRAP... don't know "how", per se, but the guy explained the process and it was done with saran wrap of all things... basically resulted in a "marble" finish with swirls of baby blue hues and blue-tinted pearl whites... to "hear" the process, i thought i was going to run my hand across the fender and it be bumpy as all get out, but it was just as smooth as any professional paint job... he's retired from body work and did professional paint jobs, but the saran wrap thing was his own thing after he retired...

Location: Under the X in Texas | ANY car in ANY colors painted by Larry Watson, especially his pearls with scallops and striping, I find to be extremely attractive. Larry's eye for color combinations and his fluid lines following form were a talent unequalled by any car customizer in my lifetime. Larry passed away within the last year.

Expert Posts: 1730 Location: Michigan | Well I became partial to them on my car. Didn't like it at first but more and more folks tell me it was the pinstriping of the Fifties. A lot of people stop and say they like them while I am at shows. Of course the wheels help to accent them as well. Expert 5K+ Posts: 8948 Location: WHEELING,WV.>>>HOME OF WWVA | back here the saran wrap deal is called wrinkle paint . mainly because thats the way the wrap goes on . i've seen wrinkle paint that was drop dead beautiful . like anything else , it was mostly a fad , pretty much like lace . first time i saw wrinkle paint was almost 30 yrs. ago . just about the time lace was just about done , at least here anyway -------------------------------------------later

Extreme Veteran Posts: 594 Location: Melbourne, Australia | I love the Larry Watson style paint jobs 'cause they don't fight the lines of the car .... Thanks for the big pics of the 57's.. I've seen the green / yellow coupe that was done when the car was new but have never seen the burgundy/silver / gold 57 coupe before...
VERY nice pics!!!

Expert Posts: 3575 Location: Netherlands | On my black '60 NewYorker above in the 5th pic, I painted the pass.side first and after that the driversside. But the driversside looks better imo because I thickened up the lines a bit more. I learned it all looks fairly easy on paper and in Photoshop, but once you actually sit down besides the car with a marking pencil and masking tape in hand, things don't seem that easy anymore. You really have to have a clear vision of what lines you want to put down before you start at all. What I did found important, was that the painted lines should have an origin in something shiny like a bumper-edge or wheel hub, so the lines actually look like 'speedlines' as when the car is moving at high speed. Here are some pics of the masking I did for both sides; Pass.side Driversside

Member Posts: 30 Location: Mystic, Connecticut | I like mild custom paint jobs on Forward Look cars. Not so much full out restomod conversions. A quality custom paint job will always draw attention to the car. The only opinion that counts is the car's owner. Do they like it? But remember, not everyone may like what you do. My wife and I were looking for a house several years ago and the realtor told us that the seller had just completed a $10,000 new master bathroom. Purple tile, lavender toilet, lavender tub, lavender shower, grape blinds and violet wall paper.... wow.... As for resale, IMO you might be better off selling the car in stock condition. Location: Indiana | That's when you turn to the realtor and proclaim, "Don't care if that cost them $10k, half of that is labor costs and it SUBTRACTS $3k off my offer price because that's how much it's going to cost me to undo it all!"
