Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Hi all Moparites and Forward lookers. Could you let me know of a good reputable business that can repair the pitting on pot metal and put a beautiful re-chrome job on it. Like my tail light towers for my 57 Adventurer. Also the front fender ornaments with the horizontal lines and the gold helmet. Some chrome jobs I have seen look really thick and I am worried that the horizontal lines like on the fender ornaments for instance would be filled up/gobbed up looking. Plus I am worried about getting my same piece back that I sent. Would you electric pencil etch your name on the inside of the part ? Thanks ! Cory. DeSoto lives !!!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8445 Location: Perth Australia | Anything you get chromed with fine lines will loose a little definition, its not so much the chroming as its the polishing and if its on potmetal, its worse. As for marking your parts, thats your call, but if you dont trust your vender, find one that you do

Regular Posts: 58 Location: SE Iowa | I had several parts chromed in Quincy Illinois at a place called Precision Plating. They do excellent work and are very reasonable on prices. I would recommend them to anyone.

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Wouldn't the triple plating puddle in the fine lines ? I will go look at the fender emblems and see what the pitting is like in the line section. Maybe just a flash chrome on that section so it doesn't puddle. ??? Heading to the shed now. DeSoto lives !!!

Expert Posts: 1886 | Paul's is not what it used to be. I just started with a new guy: http://www.advancedcustomchrome.com I met him in person at Carlisle, super nice guy and loved his work there. Very hands on owner, which I liked. I get my first test pieces back from him on monday. I'll post up how they look. I sent him 61 imperial taillight bezels and a 65 chrysler taillight bezel. He isn't cheap, but I expect the quality to be excellent

Elite Veteran Posts: 1102 Location: Hayward, Calif | I found a shop in Santa Clara, Cal. I talked to them, and was told they could repair pitted pot metal and rechrome. When I get to that point I will take some pieces to them and see how it goes. Faith Bumper Service, 1085 Di Giulio Ave. Santa Clara, Cal. 95050. 408-986-1226 or 800-675-7007 M-F 9-5 Jerry

Veteran Posts: 279 Location: Klein, TX | mikes2nd - 2014-09-05 3:09 PM cost? Looks great! I can't give a price on the individual items. I took over 80 pieces to them from the Firesweep and they were very fair in my estimation. I have been doing business with them for about 25 years ago and have done about 10 cars over that time and they did the polishing and plating on all of them. The prices sure have gone up over the years. They have to deal with many more environmental issues these days as well as higher costs in materials and labor.

Expert Posts: 1348 Location: Valley Forge, Pa. | You're asking about pot metal parts with fine lines like the peice I had done in my pict.? I sent it to NU-CHROME LLC in Mass. They called and talked to me about the part. I spacifically asked that they could restore it by removing the pock marks and not damamging it. They said that they could and their price was well below Paul's[but so is everyone]. I don't know if Paul's could do this type of peice any better but NU-CHROME ruined it. I don't know how it is supposed to be done, but they simply removed the pock marks by buffing them down. The fine sharp edges of the fins are gone and are now non-parallel smooth mounds. There are fine pits strating to reappear and the pock marks are back. This work was done 12/30/2011. Less than 3 years ago. Bottom line, I don't know if this peiec could be chromed without messing it up but before I do anything like this again, I am going to find out and get it in writing. IF you can get them done correctly, please post picts, price, and who. Meanwhile, I'm tring to find a peice like the one they destroyed that is good enough for rechrome..

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | AND, there are just some parts that defy re-chroming; viz: the textured finish on the 57 Dodge horn rings. Decades ago had the OEM horn ring be re-chromed. Excellent quality of the chrome, but they (had to) polish out the textured finish on it. Found a usable but not show quality horn ring and lived with it until I could afford to pay big bux for a NOS guy. If anyone is interested in either of these guys, please PM me; cheap(-like) to a good home... Expert 5K+ Posts: 8445 Location: Perth Australia | The 60 plymouth horn bar for the aero wheel looks impossible to re chrome to me The lines (grooves) in it are so fine that they would have to be lost in the copper and zinc process, let alone polishing Almost like trying to chrome a record For the young ones, thats a big black cd, used in the old days on a record player :)

Expert Posts: 1886 | Perfection costs will vary depending on the part obviously. My suggestion would be to contact him. I had a lot of things done at one time and got an overall price. Turnaround time for normal work is 8-10 weeks. He can do things sooner if needed but prefers to work on that line.
