Going to tear the front end down on each side of my 56 regent for cleaning/painting of the frame and parts as I have the entire front clip off, so it is easy to do now.
Any tips/tricks of the trade I need to be aware of before diving in? I am going to replace shocks and steering link/tie rod ends while I'm here too; anything else I should replace now?

Check the lash in the king pins, most probable the LH side is worn. If the LH is worn, then change both sides.

Ordered a kingpin set today; never replaced kingpins or bushings before.
Anybody got some tips or wisdom on how to do this part of the job?

When you use the reamer to ream out the bushes to fit the pin , ALWAYS make the adjustments to cutting depth of the reamer in VERY SMALL increments to get to the final fit.

Once you have taken to much of a cut, you can't go back and you will have two choices.

That is :-

1. Put up with sloppy kingpins.

2. Or get new bushes and start again.

Hope that is of some help.

Get an adjustable reamer with a pilot guide. Otherwise you might ream the bushings to the correct diameter, but out of line and then you can't insert the king pin. Otherwise, what Terry wrote........

Fireguyfire,

Here is a thread on the subject of Kingpins. I did mine on my 1956 Dodge a couple of months back and posted all of the disassemble and reassembly of the kingpins on the thread. The hardest part is installing and reaming the new bushings. Also note, if you have a flat 6, the kingpins take two bushings, if you have a V8, one of the bushings is replaced with a roller bearing.
