Pulled my engine and tranny today on my 56 Dodge regent. Spent a lot of time under it for the first time and realize that like a lot of canadian plodges the entire underside of the car including the frame is painted that famous muddy grey. I was thinking the frame would have been black, but it is obviously grey from the factory. Also the firewall and underside of the trunk and hood are grey.
My question now is, would the front end bolt on components like bumper brackets and upper and lower control arms springs and sway bar have been black or grey also? There is no paint left on these parts for me to tell and I want to keep it as original as possible.

No idea, but they were probably left it all natural like on the later models (control arms I am thinking about)

It seems that the car manufacturers of the day were not trying to win the "top undercarrage" trophy at the local car show, so as long as it was funtional and was not going to fail (in the near future), all would be good

The grey on the underside of the trunk and hood is proper, my 56 Dodge and Plymouth are that way. The firewall usually matches the color of the car. Most of the suspension parts are a medium (not super flat or super shiny) black. Some of the suspension parts were left in bare metal (or at least people disagree on if they were black or bare metal, because there were variances from car to car). Not sure on the bumper brackets.

I think there are some pictures posted somewhere in this forum that have more detail, but that is the information I had off the top of my head. Sorry I can't offer more.

Perhaps this is the page you are referring to?

I wish there was more footage on "Wishes on Wheels" http://youtu.be/b6L0ykX9lPU (like at 5:45).
