I found this red almost perfect 60 DeSoto steering wheel about 10 years ago, It has one little imperfection on the right side bottom part of the white section. But it literally looks like it was pulled off a car that was a year old. I planned on putting it in my 60 DeSoto. Now you guys can tell me your thoughts or bitch at me. Here is the deal, my 60 is one of 95 2 door crossram Adventurers, it is the second to last one made and the only one of the 95 that is DC2 (baby blue), with a blue metallic roof and blue interior. I have planned on doing it red with a red interior (auto swivel seat). Some people say do it the way you want because I don't plan on selling it, but about of people say to keep it original. I guess baby blue is ok, and it sort of fits the pastel colors of the forward look era, and I'm kind of Leaning towards keeping it original, but I sure do love red (sorry Doc). Then looking at the darker candy red 60 300F they are doing in Sweden makes me want red. What are your thoughts. Here is a couple pics of the red wheel.

As you asked and so you know where I am comming from

I like mild customs as long as they are kept in the original style of the car, dont like in correct make engines, but dont mind later engines, basically a hot rodder, but not a radical customiser, that said, I think you should keep the car as original (including colour) as you car

Yours is a high end car and as such, you are a custodian of the car, you said your never going to sell it, so have I about cars I no longer have and none of us live forever

Thats me, if you want to hotrod something, I would buy a less rare car

My old friend Terry had a cinnamon red metallic Adventurer coupe, and my brother had a bright red
with white top Adventurer coupe. I thought the cinnamon was pretty, but rather sedate. Terry never
put proper whitewalls on the car, and it suffered that "hillbilly beater" look as a result. My brother's car
was stunning, but got a lot of negative attention from da po-leece. And there was the neverending stream
of comments about "Christine" ....

I liked my all-black w/silver interior x-ram 3-onda-floor Fireflite coupe much better, although I never
could bring myself to run it on the original steelies with dog dishies. That was a really special car that
I should have never let go.

But hey, ... it's your car. I'd keep it original because it is a special car, but that's just me. I think a
red x-ram car is a little "predictable". The non-hotrod original color makes it even more unusual.

Actually I stopped reading after the part in which you said “hey Darren would you like to drive to Layton and buy this from me real cheap”

But seriously, it’s your car, do what you want. It’s not like you are pulling a numbers matching engine and ebay-ing it. And if that results in a blue steering wheel that needs to go in storage, I would be happy to store it for you, and inspect it many times per year on drives.

I will resto-mod anything, numbers matching or not, but I never do something I can’t undo.

My original blue wheel is real nice, it's only a 28k mile car. A few cracks. I hate to un-original it. It's a tough decision. Doc, a manual trans dog dish car is pretty uncommon, would have been a cool one to still have.
Darren, I have re-read that a few times and I can't see where I said that.:) I would like to check out your car sometime.

Uh, funny, it must just be on my computer. I would like to have our 60 finished but it has been a very busy summer. I am ready for the winter slow down so I can work on it. Too many distractions, my wife fell in love with an 84 Jag that was going to to be a flip, so I have a de-Lucus project and I finally found a Jeep Commando project. We are shooting for next summer.

Our steering wheel is in very rough condition, I am going to try to save it because I love the challenge, but always have my eye out, just in case things go the way I think they will. I don’t mind spending a few hours before I give up and spend $2K+.

I was in Layton about a month ago, picked up a Chevelle, wish I would have thought about it, I would like to see an Adventure in person.

Cory,
I must admit that I understand both sides of the question. It is your car, but the car most likely will be here long after you and I are long gone. From a historical perspective, these really rare cars need to be saved and cherished forever. Originality means different things to different people. This site is always showing us how people all define the word "original". It will not be totally original painted in red, or green, or lilac for that matter.
There was only 1 light blue x ram 60 Desoto made. If you paint it red, a lot of the uniqueness will be gone forever. Who, after you are gone will be able to change it back to light blue? As we all know, the parts are getting hard to find.
Darren made a suggestion, and I have one as well. Why don't you trade me the x ram car for my 60 Matador wagon. You could paint the matador red and not have near the historical ramifications as you would by altering your "one of one" car to fit what you want now.
Your prior 60 Desoto coupe was red. It was a spectacular car. We all loved it and it had a "wow" factor that was hard to beat. Give this special blue car the respect it deserves by keeping everything as it was from the factory. History will thank you, and as you always say, "Desoto lives" and you will help generations to come, appreciate what a great marque Desoto is. Would you consider painting your 57 Adventurer red?????
Scott

Darren, give me a call next time your up in Bountiful and I can show you the 60. I hear you Scott, it will more than likely go back original, its just a tough one for me. Id like to see one in person in DC2 Baby Blue to give me an idea what it will look like, that might get me more excited. When someone buys a new car, picking a color would be hard, some colors I will never understand, like brown. DeSoto lives !!!

PM or better yet send me your number (Darren@rushps.com), I need to get up to Bountiful, I keep promising to go pick up some seat fabric, but I get busy and forget, but I will soon be to a point that I need it.

Say did you say yours if blue? Probably had better forget I said that, I have no reason to go to Bountiful but I will call when I am going.

Doc, please try to imagine me reaching out of your screen and giving you a hard SLAP!

I say keep that Desoto Blue. A 1960 Adventurer (2dr) is a model I love, and I have never seen one in the flesh, or a 4 door for that matter.

Steve.
