I have a 1956 Dodge with power steering. The steering wheel has a lot of play in it from the gear box. Does anyone have any information
on adjusting the play out of the gear box?

You can try bringing the adjustment on the top of the gear box down, not too much as you can bind it up, of course make sure the steering components are good.

I would try to adjust the box as a last resort.
Find out first where exactly the play is coming from. A lot of things can be worn or flex between steeringwheel and tires.

The free motion is coming from the steering box. When you turn the wheel the pitman arm does not move until the free play is taken up. I am not sure where the
adjustment on the Dodge power steering box is made. I don't think it is the screw on top of the box that a manual box has. The screw on top of the power steering
box is for flow control.

Does anyone know about replacing or servicing the "rag joint" at the steering gear box?

There is a sector shaft adjusting screw and jam nut right next to the hose fitting.

Problem with adjusting a used box is the fact that most of the wear occurs within a few degrees left/right of straight ahead. If you reduce the slack in those few degrees it will probably be too tight when you steer past those few degrees and might bind up or lock up.

That sounds about right. I'll try adjusting it and see what happens.
Thanks

I got the play out of mine making that adjustment. It didn't take much.
