I am curious what the factory color would have been on my steering gearbox in my 1956 Dodge Regent; I am assuming either it was bolted to the frame before painting which would make it chassis black, or it was left the unpainted cast metal and bolted on after the frame was painted.
Anyone know which of the 2 was more likely?

Though assembly line processes changed to the torsion bar chassis cars I'm more familiar with, it seems I have always, on every car seen bare as-cast steering boxes everywhere, never painted. The '57 and newer FL boxes being cast aluminum, they are always found unpainted. If that helps your '56 any.
